Historic Salem homes just outside of downtown surrounded by greenery
Just a mile west of downtown Salem, Mack Park is a suburban community primarily comprised of green space. The area is home to Mack Park's sports fields, community farms and historic locations like Harmony Grove Cemetery, which has been in operation since 1839. Colonial Revivals and New Englanders from the 1800s line the area's shaded sidewalks and streets. Residents here are also close to a number of shopping and dining options. “It is a much more affordable area compared to downtown Salem,” says Julie Andrews, a sales associate with Keller Williams Evolution who has been serving Salem for over 10 years. “It’s also in a beautiful location.”

Most homes are placed closer to the roads, creating plenty of backyard space and providing quick street and sidewalk access for commuting or morning jogs. Residences were commonly constructed in the early to late 1800s, and prices range between $400,000 and $700,000.

Mack Park and the Harmony Grove Cemetery
Residents have several options for enjoying the outdoors, especially at the community’s namesake park. Mack Park sits atop a hill overlooking the community, with a baseball diamond and playset being popular spots for play. The park is also home to the Mack Park Farm, a community garden created in 2020 to grow healthy food for residents. “They took an abandoned baseball field and turned it into a garden space,” Andrews says. “It's just a beautiful spot with a free farmers market every week, and a lot of it even ends up going to the food pantry.” The Harmony Grove Cemetery is a historic cemetery and the final resting place of many landmark residents of Salem. The cemetery offers walking and self-guided tours, giving visitors access to a small part of the 57-acre area. There are a number of plaques to explore in the public area, from those noting unique plants or trees to markers for famous resting places, like that of John Bertram, a renowned sea captain and Salem philanthropist in the 1800s. “It’s a lovely antique cemetery,” Andrews says.
