A mixture of natural scenery and suburban convenience
Set on the southern edge of Salem, South Gateway blends the city's suburban landscape with the natural beauty of the surrounding Willamette Valley. "It's very well-known for its beautiful landscapes, a lot of hills and trees, and Oregonians love their trees," says Irma Coleman, the Neighborhood Program Coordinator for Salem. "It's very different from Downtown. South Gateway is much more relaxed and tranquil. It's why families gravitate toward it." Multiple parks and a local golf course provide plenty of options for enjoying the outdoors, while mature trees and detailed landscaping bring natural beauty close to home. The neighborhood is primarily residential but has some nearby shopping and dining options, plus major roads that make it easy to travel throughout Salem.

Outdoor fun in at South Gateway parks
Several parks in the neighborhood offer a variety of activities. Wes Bennett Park is a small green space with a playground, walking path and open field. Kids can enjoy playing in the park's splash pad on hot summer days. Bryan Johnston Park has more walking paths, playgrounds and a half-court basketball court. Sumpter Park is next to a local elementary school and has basketball and tennis courts, picnic areas and more playgrounds. All the parks have tall, shady trees—including Douglas firs—bringing a natural Pacific Northwest feeling to the neighborhood. The neighborhood also has community gardens on Sunnyside Road and Baxter Road that are operated in partnership with Marion Polk Food Share. Residents can rent out plots and grow their own food, and the organization provides resources such as tools, compost, plant starts and seeds.

Creekside Golf Club is a local private golf course that has been around since 1993. The 18-hole, par-73 course was designed by Oregon native and PGA Tour winner Peter Jacobson. Members can enjoy a round of golf among gently rolling hills and lush tree-lined fairways. The club also offers a performance center with club fittings, repairs and an indoor golf simulator. Other activities at Creekside include an outdoor swimming pool, fitness center and spa. Danny's on the Green is the club's restaurant, serving Pacific Northwest-inspired dishes in a dining room decked out in golf memorabilia. Nearby Willamette Valley Vineyards is a scenic spot to enjoy a glass of local wine and food pairings. The sprawling estate overlooks the rolling hills of the valley and rows upon rows of grapevines.

Local restaurants and national supermarkets close to home
South Gateway's local restaurants provide a variety of cuisine options. "There's a place called Beehive Station, which is a food cart area, so there's several restaurants in that food truck community. So that's a really popular spot," says Erin Garibay, a broker with HomeSmart Realty Group who has sold several homes in the neighborhood. Vendors here serve Thai food, smash burgers, Greek food and hot dogs, among various other dishes. Padington's Pizza on Commercial Street is a local spot founded in 1978.
