A neighborhood right along the Wasatch Range
Bonneville Hills is an established suburb 5 miles east of downtown Salt Lake City. It’s near the Wasatch Range, providing mountainside views and tons of recreational activities for residents. Other than its convenient location, the neighborhood is known for its namesake golf course and elementary school – The Bonneville Golf Course and Bonneville Elementary School - both of which are well-regarded in the city. “People are drawn here because of the schools,” says Lynn Griese, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty who’s been selling homes in Utah for two decades. “Bonneville has historically been one of the best elementary schools in the state. Even though it’s called Bonneville Hills, Griese says the area is pretty flat and tends to be a walking neighborhood. “I see people walking here all the time,” she says. “People can walk to the nearest grocery store or restaurant. You just don’t get that much in Salt Lake.” The neighborhood attracts employers since its so close to major employers like The University of Utah and its medical campus, 2 miles north. “A lot of professionals live here – like lawyers, doctors, professors,” Griese says. “It’s a mix of people who move here because of the university and people who’ve lived here for decades.”
Ranch-style homes with polished lawns
Bonneville Hills has predominantly ranch-style homes and a few two-story homes with bay windows and brick chimneys. Depending on size, homes are priced between $700,000 and $1 million. Properties have manicured front lawns and paved walkways that lead from the porch to small sidewalks. People can park in one and two-door garages, in the driveway or on the street – but residents must leave space for trash bins and basketball hoops. “What I like about the community is that when you drive through here, it has an East Coast vibe,” Griese says. “The black walnut trees shade the streets, it’s just a beautiful area.”

Neighborhood hangouts at Emigration Café
The Foothill Village Shopping Center is in the neighborhood’s northeastern corner. It includes Dan’s Market, the local grocery store, clothing stores, salons and some banks. There are also some quick-to-go eateries, including Cupbob, where people can get Korean barbecue in a cup and Slice House, a small pizza spot. The 15th and 15th shopping district is just a mile from Bonneville Hills, offering people a walkable area with boutiques and coffee shops. Jolley’s Corner is a clothing store that also has a pharmacy inside and is known for selling knickknacks like jewelry holders. “Jolley’s just has a real neighborhood feel,” Griese says. Another spot Griese says attracts many locals is Emigration Café, which sits next to Jolley’s. The café serves breakfast and lunch and offers outdoor seating with red sunshades. “It’s a really good hangout spot,” she says.

Bonneville Golf Course, Sugar House Park
Nearby hiking destinations include The Living Room Trailhead, a trail that leads to an open area that resembles a living room with couch-shaped rocks, and Jack’s Peak Trailhead. This trail is named after Jack Edwards, a child who died of Leukemia in 1995. Jack's parents scattered his ashes on the mountain and later added a mailbox memorial, inviting hikers to leave a note. Less than two miles north, Sunnyside Park has baseball fields, basketball courts, large grassy fields and a small playground. Sugar House Park, Salt Lake City's largest greenspace, has pavilions, a playground and paved paths that lead to a small pond in the park's heart. Here, about 2 miles south, people can feed geese or take in the scenic waterfront views of trees bouncing off the water’s reflection. People visit Bonneville Golf Course for its public 18-hole layout less than a mile away.

Student-led theatre performances at Clayton Middle School
Children can attend Bonneville Elementary School, which earns an A from Niche, before they may advance to Clayton Middle School, which receives a B-plus and is known for its student-led theater performances. “I go to their theatre productions; Some are better than professional shows in the city,” Griese says. “Their productions are insane.” Students may transition to B-plus-rated Highland High School, which has a daycare with childcare classes. Rowland Hall is the nearest private K-12 school, 2 miles away. The University of Utah is a public college nearby, while the private Westminster University is less than 2 miles south. Nearby churches include The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Wasatch Presbyterian Church.
Utah’s Hogle Zoo, The Delta Center
The 9th and 9th Street Festival is an annual event in September three miles away. It includes food and art vendors, a bike rodeo, and face painting. People visit Utah’s Hogle Zoo, 2 miles away, to see exotic animals such as tigers, giraffes, and panda bears. Downtown Salt Lake City is not too far and is home to many attractions like the Delta Center, where the Utah Jazz basketball team plays, and City Creek Center, a large mall with over 100 stores.
Daily commutes on Foothill Drive
Some people’s mornings start on Foothill Drive, a major road that leads to Interstate 80, reaching The University of Utah. 1300 South and 1700 South are two other main roads that lead to U.S. Route 89, which helps commuters reach Downtown Salt Lake City. “One of the number one reasons people come to Bonneville Hills is that it has good freeway access and proximity to the University of Utah and downtown Salt Lake City,” says Joel Carson, a Realtor with Utah Real Estate PC and Salt Lake City native. Utah Transit Authority has public bus stops along 1900 South, helping people reach desired destinations in the Salt Lake area. There are sidewalks all throughout Bonneville Hills. 1700 South is the only main road with a bike lane. The Salt Lake City International Airport is 13 miles away. The University of Utah Hospital is the closest 24-hour medical center, 3 miles north.
What’s the weather like in Bonneville Hills?
Because of the area’s arid climate and topography, it experiences unique environmental circumstances. Wildfire season occurs from July to October, while polluted air can get trapped in the air at any time. The Utah Department of Air Quality constantly monitors the area’s inversion.
