A well-established, walkable suburb in Salt Lake City
“High School Musical” fans might recognize East Central, since its high school served as a filming location for the blockbuster Disney film. Outside of its Hollywood notoriety, East Central is an established Salt Lake City neighborhood 2 miles from downtown and 3 miles from the University of Utah and its medical campus. “East Central has a lovely mix of historical architecture like Craftsman bungalows and Victorians and it’s just a hop, skip and a jump from downtown and the university,” says Jazmin Adamson, a Realtor with Align Complete Real Estate Services who has lived in Salt Lake City her whole life. “One of the best walkable commercial corridors in Salt Lake is here; You put all that together and it’s a great place to live.” The area attracts students, but Adamson says it also has professionals like teachers and doctors, making it less of a party neighborhood than other college-centered communities. “It’s very desirable,” says Carriene Porter, an associate broker with Equity Real Estate who has been selling homes for more than two decades. “It’s an older section of town that’s still very eclectic, which is very appealing to people moving to Utah who are not from here.”

Older Craftsmen, condos and some new builds
East Central’s housing inventory includes condominiums, single-family homes with Craftsman touches and turn-of-the-century styles like Tudors and Victorians. “There’s a lot of college students here since it’s close to the university, which makes it a rent-heavy area,” says Paul Svendsen, a Realtor with Windermere Real Estate-Utah who was born and raised in East Central. East Central has walkable streets with sidewalks shaded by maple trees. Price points for mid-20th century condominiums range from $300,000 to $570,000, depending on size, and newly built condos can cost between $850,000 and $900,000. Single-family homes built near the turn of the 20th century are priced between $450,000 to more than $1 million; newer, two-story builds tend to cost more. Homes sit close together and have small, manicured lawns and paved driveways.

Shop and dine at 9th and 9th
East Central is home to the “9th and 9th” area, a walkable district considered one of the most vibrant in the entire city. Visitors of 9th and 9th, known as the heart of East Central, can eat curry underneath an umbrella on the patio at Thai Garden Bistro. The 9th and 9th Book and Music Gallery sells rare and used books, records and acoustic instruments inside a boutique with red draping curtains and wooden bookshelves. Live musicians play their instruments in front of the store. Nearby Tulie Bakery sits north of the district and serves coffee and pastries. North of 9th and 9th, local favorite Pie Pizzeria lies just west of the U of U campus. With its pi symbol logo, the restaurant sits at the bottom of a staircase with old brick walls adorned with graffiti. Aker is an upscale spot in downtown Salt Lake City, about 2 miles away. “If it’s a special occasion and you’re looking to spend a bit more, Aker is really good,” Svendsen says. Smith’s is in the neighborhood for grocery shopping, and east of the neighborhood is Trolley Square, a popular shopping area with a Whole Foods Market.
