Charming tree-lined blocks with mix of styles
Mature trees line Foothill Sunnyside’s streets, forming natural tunnels over some roads. Residents enjoy walking their dogs across the neighborhood, going on casual strolls with their neighbors or biking on the quiet roads. The houses vary in size, age and design, and many blend architectural styles. Like in much of the valley, ranch-style houses are common here. There are also many homes with Craftsman, bungalow, Colonial Revival and Cape Cod features. A few large and stylish homes blend Colonial, Greek and French touches. Single-family homes up to 2,000 square feet can go from about $700,000 to $900,000, while even larger houses can run between $1 million and $3.5 million. The proximity to the mountains gives outdoor enthusiasts convenient access to miles of hiking, biking and snowshoe trails. Laird and Davis parks provide two neighborhood green spaces. Children who go to Davis Park enjoy climbing on the site’s quail statues. Dog owners enjoy taking their pets to Sunnyside Park, which also provides ample field space for sports like lacrosse and rugby. The Salt Lake City Sports Complex is a destination for a wide range of activities. The complex has two Olympic-sized ice rinks, an indoor and outdoor pool and a fitness center complete with strength and cardio training equipment. The Bonneville Golf Course is a public 18-hole course spread out across a hilly landscape. Wildlife enthusiasts enjoy the exhibits at Utah’s Hogle Zoo, which is home to popular inhabitants like primates, big cats, bears and aquatic mammals. The neighborhood is also a couple miles from the historic This Is The Place Heritage Park, where visitors will easily spot a massive stone monument surrounded by statues of the pioneers. The neighborhood is home to Bonneville Elementary School, which receives an A from ratings site Niche. Students may then attend Clayton Middle School and East High School, which receive A-minus and B grades respectively from Niche. Fans of Disney movies may recognize East High, as it was the primary filming location for the film High School Musical. There’s a popular alternative in Judge Memorial Catholic High School, which receives an A-plus from Niche and is ranked among the top five best private high schools in the state. The Catholic school draws students from across and beyond the Salt Lake Valley, including places like Park City. Roughly three-quarters of its faculty hold advanced degrees, including several with doctorates. The University of Utah is less than a mile north of the neighborhood. The university’s health system, which includes the medical school, serves as the training ground for most of the state’s medical professionals.Stars and Stripes parade and concerts at Red Butte Garden
The Stars and Stripes July 4 parade occurs in the neighboring Yalecrest neighborhood. The event’s attractions include floats and vintage cars carrying American flags. Laird Park hosts community celebrations like an annual Easter Egg Hunt. Small sections of Foothill Sunnyside also close a few times during the year for celebrations like barbecues and July 4 parties. The Red Butte Garden near the university has an amphitheater and hosts an annual outdoor concert series that runs from late spring to early fall.I-80 travel to ski resorts
Foothill Drive connects to Interstate 80, which provides a route to the region’s ski resorts. Among those places is the renowned Park City area. East Sunnyside Avenue, which turns into Emigration Canyon Road, remains a well used route for those who want to reach some of the outdoor attractions east of the city. “This used to be how people got to Park City decades before I-80 was completed,” says Babs De Lay, the principal broker for Urban Utah Homes & Estates, about Emigration Canyon Road. The Utah Transit Authority runs buses in the neighborhood and has a number of stops along East Sunnyside Avenue and South 1900 East. The University of Utah Hospital is located about 3 miles north of the neighborhood. Foothill Sunnyside is close to several dining and shopping spots around 1300 South and Foothill Drive. Crema Coffee & Soda serve beverages like the S’more Caramel Please and the Almond Joy. Across the street, Sasa Kitchen serves rice bowls, hot pot and many other Chinese dishes. Nomad East patrons can relax on the patio with a wine or beer and a cheese board as they wait to try one of several thin and crispy style pizzas. Those who don’t mind making a short drive can go to Ruth’s Diner, the second oldest restaurant in the state. Located in Emigration Canyon, the establishment serves classic American fare and breakfasts in an old trolley car. For shopping needs, there’s a Harmons Emigration Market near Nomad East. A Dan’s Fresh Market also exists at the Foothill Village shopping center.Important to know
