Victorian-era suburb a few miles from Downtown Salt Lake City

Liberty Wells was once a rural Salt Lake City community established in the 19th century as farmland, until the expansion of the trolley lines brought more suburban development from 1900 to 1925. Today, the neighborhood’s grid planning make it a walkable haven full of packed local eateries and homes with Victorian feature like pitched roofs and unique wooden trim. “The area attracts younger homebuyers, people in their 20s to mid-30s,” says Jazmin Adamson, a Realtor with Align Complete Real Estate Services who has lived in Salt Lake City her whole life. “It’s a more affordable area where you can still get a charming home for a decent price.” The Liberty Wells Community Council is a nonprofit organization of volunteer residents that maintains the neighborhood’s appeal and fosters community engagement. “Liberty Wells has this universal charm. All the homes have porches with roofs, which increases the community because everyone knows each other,” says Grant Miller, Liberty Wells Community Council member and lifelong Salt Lake resident. “I joined the Community Council to be a good steward of what we have.”

Hangout with neighbors at Liberty Park

Liberty Park is Salt Lake City's oldest and second-largest park. It has sand and cement volleyball courts, playgrounds, a community pool and large grass fields perfect for picnics or pick-up football games. “Liberty Park is one of the trophies of Salt Lake,” Miller says. “Paddle boats in the summer, barbecues, pickup games, everyone sort of rendezvous and meets there. It’s the hangout spot.” Bird watchers can relax by the duck pond or encounter peacocks and flamingos at the Tracy Aviary, an 8-acre Botanical oasis within Liberty Park. Pocket parks include Ida M. Cotton Park, which has a small playground and shaded pavilion, and First Encampment Park, which features stone arrangements commemorating where the first settlers landed. Bonneville Golf Course is the closest public, 18-hole course 4 miles east. Nearby Central City Recreation Center has drop-in childcare, fitness classes and sports leagues.

Liberty Wells is home to many small coffee shops and restaurants where locals can get together and bond over a drink or a hot meal. The Park Café, located across the street from Liberty Park, is a popular breakfast spot in the community that frequently has a line out the door. Alchemy Coffee is on the same street as First Encampment Park and is known for its locally owned espresso and eclectic décor, which includes skeleton motifs. Tosh’s Ramen offers fresh Japanese dishes on State Street, like curry noodles and potstickers. Across from Tosh’s is Piper Down Pub, a perfect hangout spot with an Irish theme that serves everything from breakfast to dinner. It’s also known for its cocktails and long beer menu. Community-led hikes in Salt Lake Valley

The Liberty Wells community comes together annually in July for a commemorative hike to First Encampment Park, celebrating the first settlements in Salt Lake Valley. Afterward, attendees can enjoy live music, free drinks and snacks, or take a guided tour of the nearby historic farmhouse from the pioneers' time. Popular events in the downtown area include the Utah Arts Festival, a three-day event full of live music, food trucks and art, and the Salt Lake City Pride Parade. Both events happen annually in June.

Start the day on State Street

Most people start or end their mornings on Interstate 89, also known as State Street. Utah Transit Authority’s 205 bus line stops every 30 minutes along 500 E Street and can take passengers 3 miles into Downtown. Liberty Wells is also considered very walkable, Adamson says. “You can easily walk to many places, like the nearest coffee shops and bars,” she says. The Salt Lake City International Airport is 10 miles away for regional or international transportation. CommonSpirit Holy Cross Hospital is 3 miles away.

Air quality issues in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City has air quality issues, especially in the summer and winter. Due to its elevation and geography, polluted air gets trapped in the area, negatively affecting ozone levels. The Utah Department of Air Quality constantly monitors the quality and works to reduce air pollution.

It's a great location, just outside the sketchy part of Salt Lake City. There was a shooting the night I moved in, but otherwise, it's been good. other than that it's great.
