Poplar Grove is Salt Lake City’s second-largest neighborhood, a few miles southwest of downtown. The area isn’t very walkable, but major highways like Interstates 80 and 215 run through the neighborhood, giving locals quick access to the greater Salt Lake area. People can easily reach major employers like the University of Utah, 4 miles away. Poplar Grove is known for its multicultural scene, reflected in the many locally owned markets and restaurants. “Poplar Grove is an up-and-coming neighborhood in Salt Lake that is great for families wanting to live in a diverse neighborhood,” says Ryan Mack, the director of media and communications for the Visit Salt Lake organization. “There are some great under-the-radar bakeries, specialty shops and authentic Mexican restaurants to enjoy.” The 9 Line Trail, also called the Jordan Trail, is a 3-mile pathway next to the Jordan River. It runs through the area, along with neighboring areas like Glendale and Fairpark, and boosts outdoor activity in Poplar Grove.

Older Craftsman homes starting at $300,000
The neighborhood consists of 20th century Craftsman homes, bungalows, ramblers and manufactured homes. After a long day at work, people park their cars in their slim, paved driveways. Street parking is also a popular option in Poplar Grove. Depending on size, manufactured homes and ramblers are priced between $100,000 and $450,000. Larger, two-story homes can range between $300,000 and $500,000. Front lawns are big enough to play fetch with pets, and metal fences typically border backyards. Some residential pockets have sidewalks for daily strolls. After a long day at work, people park their cars in their slim, paved driveways. Street parking is also a popular option in Poplar Grove.

Popular eateries in Poplar Grove
Robert’s Restaurant sits just outside the neighborhood, in the northwest corner. It’s a small diner serving American dishes like steak and fries on white porcelain plates. Several Mexican restaurants are in the northeast corner, including El Asadero Mexican Food, Rancherito’s Mexican Food and the Red Iguana, which has two restaurant locations within just a few blocks of each other. Campos Market is a local Mexican bakery that only offers takeout service. For everyday essentials, people visit Smith’s on South 900 West. City Creek Center is two miles away in downtown Salt Lake City for casual shopping.

Walk through the International Peace Gardens
“Poplar Grove is known for its recreation,” says Brian Babb, a Realtor with Equity Real Estate who has been selling homes in the area for nearly a decade. “The Jordan Trail is nice for walking and biking, and it’s connected to a ton of mountain trails.” Jordan Park is right outside the neighborhood’s southeast corner. It has large grassy fields, playgrounds, a skatepark and the International Peace Gardens, which has artistic installments like the Chinese Garden lion gate, consisting of two lion statues guarding a pavilion with a traditional East Asian-style roof. The park also houses The People’s Market, which hosts a farmers market on Sundays from June to October. The public can access Rose Park Golf Course, which has a 9-hole layout that starts at $17 and an 18-hole one priced at $34.

What to do at the Utah State Fairpark?
The Utah State Fairpark is less than 2 miles north. It hosts community events, such as the Utah Asian Festival, an Ice Cream Festival – which raises money for the Utah Food Bank - and, of course, the Utah State Fair, an 11-day event with rodeos, magic shows and carnival food. Jordan Park hosts an annual Fourth of July fireworks event for the community. Salt Lake Fear Factory is a haunted destination just a mile away open year round.

Highly rated high school that serves grades 7 through 12
Children can attend Edison Elementary School before advancing to Glendale Middle, which has many activities like a rock climbing club. Both schools earn a C from Niche. Some kids can move on to West High, which receives an A and serves grades 7 through 12. It’s the oldest public school in Utah and is ranked among the state's 10 best public high schools by Niche. The University of Utah is 5 miles east. Capitol Hill Academy is the nearest K-12 private school, 3 miles north. Many locals are affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and other nearby churches include the Korean Presbyterian Church of Utah and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church.

What’s happening on Interstate 80?
People hop on Interstate 80 to go in and out of town. Utah Transit Authority’s Green Line stops along Poplar Grove’s northern end, helping commuters reach desired destinations. The Salt Lake City Airport is right above the neighborhood’s northern border. Even though its close, residents don’t deal with aircraft noise. The LDS Hospital has the nearest medical center, 4 miles away, and the University of Utah’s medical center is 6 miles away.

Wildfire season in the Salt Lake Valley
Poplar Grove’s high elevation and topography give it an arid climate. Wildfire season happens between July and November each year; residents must notify their local fire department if they plan on hosting campfires or bonfires, but most people will also need a burn permit. The climate can also create trapped, polluted air which is consistently monitored by the Utah Department of Air Quality.
