A sweet community in Salt Lake City
Sugar House, a suburb 7 miles from downtown Salt Lake City, has lived many lives. The former mill neighborhood is now considered one of the most desirable zip codes because of its walkable streets and top dining, shopping and nightlife destinations. It was home to a paper mill built by Brigham Young—one of the first Mormon pioneers in Utah—which brought much economic prosperity. The mill was torn down in 1928, and the block where it stood became home to a small grocery store, gas station, bookstore, ice cream shop and theater, which still exists today. “You walk about 5 blocks, and there’s the main shopping center,” says Jazmin Adamson, a Realtor with Align Complete Real Estate Services who has lived in Salt Lake City her whole life. “But the streets are quaint and shaded with lots of trees.” The neighborhood centers around Sugar House Park, a popular hangout for locals that was once the location for The Utah State Penitentiary from January 1851 to 1951. Today, along with being a haven for recreational activities, the park hosts annual events like the Water Lantern Festival in October.
Sugarhouse has it all, including beautiful parks and many local businesses.

Daily trips to Sugar House Coffee
Sugar House Coffee is a comfy café where visitors can get work done or play chess with friends. The shop also has occasional open mic nights and art exhibitions. Harbor Seafood & Steak Co. is a popular spot in the area with comfy booth seating for date nights and birthday dinners. Wasatch Brew Pub is a large brick building with an industrial vibe and ceilings with exposed, cylindrical vents, on the corner of Highland Drive, walking distance from Sugar House Park. The pub serves a collection of award-winning, locally brewed beers. For those who prefer cocktails over beer, Blind Rabbit Kitchen sits next to Wasatch Brew Pub, a more modern spot with high ceilings and low lighting. The Commons at Sugar House is a shopping destination with a Nordstrom Rack, Barnes & Noble, Whole Foods and a movie theater. People visit Harmons Grocery for everyday essentials.

Sports games and symphony shows in downtown Salt Lake
Water Lantern Festival is a family-friendly event where people gather together at Parley’s Creek in Sugar House Park to decorate lanterns, light them up and let them loose into the sky. Food trucks and live music are also included. Tracy Aviary & Botanical Gardens is located in Liberty Park, 4 miles north. The aviary hosts events like book swaps, guided nature walks and wine tastings. People enjoy Utah Jazz basketball games downtown at Delta Center and Utah Symphony shows at Abravanel Hall. Downtown Salt Lake City is a hub for many annual events. The Utah Arts Festival is held on the last weekend in June at the Salt Lake City Public Library. It features art booths, face painting and a community writing center. At Washington Park, The Pride parade in June is another event that welcomes thousands of attendees annually. Each September, the community visits the Utah State Fair, 2 miles from downtown, for carnival rides, live music, magic shows and fair food like turkey legs and funnel cakes.

Bungalows shaded by Utah Juniper trees
Sugar House mostly has 1900s bungalows, along with newer, colorful, craftsman-inspired homes and ranch-style homes priced between $500,000 and $1.2 million. The range depends on the number of bedrooms and renovations. Homes have enough front and back yard space for kids and pets to play outside. Utah Juniper trees line wide sidewalks. “Sugar House does have pockets with older homes, but it mostly has newer homes, compared to other neighborhoods like Yalecrest,” says Keni Nelson, a Realtor with Homeworks Property Lab Real Estate who’s lived in the area for a decade. There’s also multi-unit housing, such as duplexes and condos, that range from $400,000 to $700,000. Adamson says that Sugar House has a mix of young adults and families. Though Sugar House is flat, the city's surrounding mountains are visible throughout the neighborhood.

Sugar House is also home to the public Nibley Park Golf Course, Forest Dale Golf Course and The Country Club, a members-only golf and social club with an 18-hole course, personal training, yoga and a pool. West of the neighborhood, South Salt Lake Community Center offers fitness classes, youth sports, senior social clubs and after-school programs. No matter the season, people are either skiing or hiking the surrounding Wasatch mountains.

End the day on Interstate 80
Most people start their commutes to work and back home on Interstate 80, which runs through the neighborhood. The Utah Transit Authority's bus and train lines also connect residents to broader Salt Lake City. People can also bike and walk to work if it’s close enough. “The community is trying to promote more walkability and bike riding,” Adamson says. “A lot of the roads have changed to have a slower traffic pattern, and some bike lanes are so wide they’ve become one-way streets.” The Salt Lake City International Airport is 10 miles northwest for long-distance travel. St. Mark's Hospital is the nearest medical center two miles away.
Sugarhouse residents can use I-80 to get downtown in 10 minutes or Park City in about 20.

Air quality issues in Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City has air quality issues, especially in the summer and winter months. Due to its elevation and topography, polluted air can get trapped in the area, negatively affecting ozone levels. The Utah Department of Air Quality works to reduce air pollution, with programs like the Clean-Fleet Vehicle Program, which encourages using alternative fuel cars, like hybrid electric vehicles. Since 1995, emissions have decreased by 47 percent, according to the Utah Department of Air Quality.

The area in question is descent. However, neighbors are not especially social, particularly if you do not share the same religious and political views as them. Nobody is hostile, but it is difficult to associate with others.

One of my favorites around here is Training Table. You will get a lot of food for a reasonable price. There is pretty much any kind of restaurants you can think of.
