City proximity and old-world charm
Yalecrest has the feel of both an urban area and a suburb. Its roads are wider and lawns are larger than other city neighborhoods, but it’s also more walkable than nearby suburban areas. People know they’ve come across the community when they see the tall, black “Welcome to Yalecrest” historic markers, lettered in gold writing. Named as a National Historic District on The National Register of Historic Places in 2007, the neighborhood has an old-world charm. “Yalecrest reminds me of the Georgetown, D.C. neighborhood, where there are these big, beautiful trees and the homes are spaced far away from the road,” says Keni Nelson, a Realtor with Homeworks Property Lab who’s lived in the area for a decade. It's an established area with walkable, shaded sidewalks, with street numbers carved into the curbs in front of homes. “It’s a quieter area, where you’ll see people wearing sweaters wrapped around their shoulders,” Nelson says. “But it’s not cookie cutter; it just has a ‘retired academic’ vibe.” The neighborhood sits between the Wasatch Mountains and downtown Salt Lake City, which is 4 miles away.
Tree-lined streets and historic homes
Homes in Yalecrest were built in the early 20th century, specifically between 1910 and 1930, says Leigh Ann Bernal, principal broker of Homeworks Property Lab Real Estate. Many homes are English Tudors, brick cottages and Spanish Colonials priced between $1 million and $3 million. Cape Cods and ranches with intricate details like high archways and steep ceilings are also common and priced between $800,000 and $1 million. Most properties have chimneys, and homes sit on limestone rock formations built in the mid-1800s. “Yalecrest is lovely,” says Paul Svendsen, a Salt Lake City native and ten-year Realtor with Windermere Real Estate. “It’s one of the most desirable neighborhoods, with long, curving streets and grand, old Sycamore trees hanging over them.” Compact, sloping front yards have enough room for shrub-lined walkways and decorative gardens. Short driveways lead to small, detached garages. Tall trees line the streets, towering over narrow sidewalks where residents walk their dogs.

Latte art at Logos Coffee
Yalecrest is close to 15th and 15th, which Svendsen says is “a great little commercial node.” Restaurants in the district include a bagel store, an enchilada place, a popular sandwich shop and Mazza, a well-known Mediterranean eatery serving appetizers like hummus and entrees like lentil soup and baba ghanoush. People grab coffee and quick breakfasts at Logos Coffee, a cozy spot where baristas make creative latte art. Emigration Café is a popular restaurant with outdoor patio seating located inside the neighborhood off 1300 South. The café is across the street from Harmons Emigration Market, the neighborhood’s main grocery store. For shopping, locals stop by Hip and Humble, a boutique a mile away from Yalecrest off Harvey Milk Boulevard. City Creek Center is a shopping mall located downtown with shops like Nordstrom and H&M.

Rowland Hall is a well-regarded private school option near Yalecrest rated A-plus by Niche. This school, along with private institutions like The McGillis School, attracts young families to Yalecrest, Svendsen says. “Private schools are more of a big deal than public in the area,” he says. Air quality issues in Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City deals with air quality issues, especially in the summer and winter months. Because of the city’s elevation, polluted air tends to get trapped in the area, negatively affecting the ozone levels. The Utah Department of Air Quality constantly monitors the situation and works to reduce air pollution.
