Santa Rita features riverfront living near parks and art
About a mile south of San Angelo’s downtown area, Santa Rita is a desirable community that hugs the bend of the North Concho River. “The whole Santa Rita neighborhood is from old money,” says Carl White, San Angelo’s Parks and Recreation Director. “The Santa Rita oil well started the oil boom in West Texas, and the money that spun off from that created the neighborhood. You can see that money especially in the houses across the river from Santa Fe Park.” Residents are close to this popular city park, complete with a scenic river walk that leads to a plethora of museums and art galleries, as well as to Angelo State University. Because of its proximity to the university, Santa Rita is home to many university professors and others affiliated with the school. While larger estates sit near the riverbank, a variety of vintage bungalows line the gridded residential streets. “It was the first major development from the 1920s west of the river,” White says. “Some of the old street curbing was made during the Great Depression by the WPA.” In contrast to the historical roots of the pedestrian-friendly roads throughout the neighborhood, the slightly less historic U.S. Route 67 runs along Santa Rita's west side, connecting residents to other parts of West Texas.
Santa Rita is a right knit community with walkable streets and riverside parks.

Santa Rita Park and Santa Fe Park provide recreational green space
Santa Rita’s namesake park, located next to the elementary school, features a lagoon lined with mesquite trees. The park also has lighted tennis and pickleball courts. “Santa Rita Park is one of the most quintessential neighborhood parks in San Angelo,” White says, who lives two blocks away. “It was developed back in the 1930s.” Brown Park is another pocket park, with a playground built in 2023, a baseball field and lighted tennis courts.
Many residents consider Santa Fe Park, located just across the North Concho River, to be the city’s central park. “Citizens acquired the grounds of the park from the Santa Fe Railroad, on the condition that they would do something good with the land,” White says. In addition to a 9-hole walking golf course, the park features athletic fields, a Kid’s Kingdom playground and a 4-mile lighted trail along the winding river. “There’s this group called Art in Uncommon Places that has been widely successful in creating art here in San Angelo. They created these mosaic cars that you can pass on your river walk,” White says. “The lady who headed the project was inspired by the mosaics in Barcelona.”

San Angelo’s waterlilies and museums present visual art
The International Waterlily Collection is situated at Santa Rita’s northern end, near Santa Fe Park. The botanical garden displays one of the most extensive collections of both hybrid and classic waterlilies in the world. A free citywide event with food and drink vendors, Lily Fest welcomes the community to browse the collection of temperate and tropical lillies.
Just east of Santa Rita, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts is the city’s main art museum, open to the public most days until 4:00 P.M. Galleries include collections dedicated to Texas and Spanish art, as well as both permanent and rotating exhibits. “There’s also a new museum on Angelo State University’s campus called the Mayer Museum,” White says. “It’s free and becoming very popular.” The 32,000-square-foot science museum features cultural and interactive exhibits. “We were recently named the Visual Arts Capital of Texas,” White adds, referring to a designation bestowed upon the city by the Texas Legislature in 2021.

Local stores and eateries line Sherwood Way and the river’s bend
Sherwood Way, or Business Route 67, is lined with storefronts, eateries and grocers, including Walmart Neighborhood Market and H-E-B. On the southern end, The Original Henry’s is a popular San Angelo Mexican restaurant, and nearby Smokehouse Bar-B-Q offers a drive-thru option. Continuing north along Sherwood, Peasant Village serves American cuisine for lunch and dinner within an old Craftsman-style home. On the other side of Santa Rita, Mr. T’s Deli is a local diner inside a former 1930s grocery market. And overlooking the river, Biga Bistro & Restaurant offers a modern take on Italian classics, specializing in pastries, cannoli and wine.
Located near Biga Bistro where the North Concho River bends, St. Paul Presbyterian Church occupies a large corner lot. The building’s avant-garde Spanish Revival architecture features a white stucco exterior and a 30-foot steel cross jutting above a curved facade.
