Sunset
A busy retail pocket around the Sunset Mall serves the city
To many San Angelo residents, Sunset is the local shopping destination in the city. In fact, 50% of the neighborhood is retail and business space. Where Sherwood Way meets the Houston Harte Expressway on the west side of Sunset, a busy commercial section includes salons, fitness studios, medical clinics, and a variety of shops and eateries. The Sunset Mall is an indoor shopping mall with Dillard’s, JCPenney and other department stores. Residents can grab groceries at Walmart, H-E-B or Market Street, catch a show at Cinemark Tinseltown and run errands at Target. In addition to fast-food spots and popular chain restaurants like Outback and Chili’s, this retail area features Cielo, a trendy Mexican-American spot with specialty cocktails, and Masa, a Japanese establishment serving sushi and other favorites.Ranch-styles and townhomes make up half of Sunset
While half of the neighborhood is occupied by commercial spaces, detached single-family homes and townhomes comprise the other half of Sunset, and about 55% of residents here own their homes. Wide and relatively quiet drives and lanes branch off winding streets and boulevards, a handful ending in courts and cul-de-sacs. Elm and oak trees shade well-kept grassy or hardscaped front lawns. It’s common to find ranch-styles with brick or stucco exteriors, many with attached two-car garages and fenced-in backyards, some featuring in-ground pools, for around $205,000 to $385,000. These 1,500- to 3,000-square-foot single-family homes were built between the mid-1970s and the mid-1990s, and several have seen recent updates that reflect more modern interiors. Buyers can also find 1,200- to 1,800-square-foot townhome units from about $180,000 to $200,000.Several major highways connect commuters to West Texas
Houston Harte Expressway, or U.S. Route 67, wraps around the western edge of Sunset, merging with the 306 Loop. The expressway also connects to U.S. Route 87, known locally as Highway 87, just north of the neighborhood. These major thoroughfares diverge in all directions, helping to bring commuters to several surrounding West Texas cities. McKim adds that there are plans to extent Interstate 27 from Canada to Mexico, running through San Angelo. For those without a vehicle, Concho Valley Transit services the community, including separate bus routes for both the ASU campus and the Air Force base.ASU student residents and Goodfellow military residents
Angelo State University, or ASU, is situated less than 3 miles east of Sunset. ASU has been designated as both a Hispanic Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education and a certified Military Friendly School by the Military Friendly organization since 2010. Residents can visit the 268-acre campus to support the 15 NCAA Division II sports teams that compete in the Lone Star Conference. ASU boasts renowned programs in business and health studies, and the Carr Academic Scholarship helps incoming freshmen with a high school GPA of at least 3.0 and qualifying ACT or SAT scores. “ASU is part of the Texas Tech school system,” McKim says. “It’s a great feeder university to medical school or law school at Tech.”Goodfellow Air Force Base is located about 5 more miles east past ASU. The 1,235-acre base is part of the Air Education and Training Command, which focuses on cryptologic and intelligence training for all military branches.
San Angelo's Central High offers an Air Force JROTC program
Students are part of the San Angelo Independent School District, which receives a B grade from Niche. Students can start at Bowie Elementary School, which has a B, and then progress to Glenn Middle School, which receives a B-minus. Central High School holds a B-plus and offers an Air Force Junior ROTC program. Cadets from the high school’s AF JROTC program can visit Goodfellow Air Force Base for field training exercises, combat simulations and other hands-on base experiences.Spend the day at Unidad Park or visit San Angelo State Park
On the east side of Sunset, away from the bustle of retail and dining, the 7-acre Unidad Park provides recreational space for the neighborhood. There’s a playground that was built in 2022, baseball fields, art structures and a half-mile walking trail that connects to the Red Arroyo Trail. The 4-mile Red Arroyo Trail runs through nearby neighborhoods from Knickerbocker Road to Sherwood, and the trail’s logo was designed by Angelo State University students. Just north of Unidad Park is San Angelo Dog Park, complete with separate fenced-in sections for large and small breeds.A couple of miles northwest of Sunset, San Angelo State Park provides 50 miles of hiking and biking trails through protected lands. There’s a child-friendly 2-mile Dinosaur Trail that passes fossils and tracks, as well as horse-friendly campsites and fishing access on O.C. Fisher Lake.
San Angelo hosts citywide rodeos, fireworks and lily festivals
The city of San Angelo hosts both small-scale and large-scale events, like the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo. The rodeo, typically a two-week event in April at the fairgrounds, brings more than 150,000 visitors. “We’re among the top five cowboy rodeo towns in the nation,” McKim says. “We have a little shop downtown that sells more boot-shaped shot glasses than anywhere else.” In May, the Simply Texas Blues Festival features a rib cook-off and blues music. For Independence Day, there are two different fireworks shows, one held on July 3rd at the Bill Aylor Memorial River Stage and one held on July 4th above Lake Nasworthy. “We usually spend between $30,000 and $40,000 on the fireworks,” Leabo says. McKim adds that Goodfellow Air Force Base contributes $15,000 to the show. The International Waterlily Collection, about 3 miles from Sunset along Sherwood Way, displays one of the world’s most extensive assortment of hybrid and classic waterlilies. Each September, the botanical gardens open to the public for Lily Fest, a free family-friendly event with food and drink vendors.
