Quiet country living while still in the city
About five miles from downtown San Antonio, Artesia is a residential neighborhood on the city's east side that offers a quiet, laid-back lifestyle. Like many San Antonio neighborhoods, it attracts buyers for its proximity to nearby military bases, but what's unique about Artesia is how close it is to downtown while still feeling like it's out in the country. "This neighborhood is very quiet," says Realtor Brenda Brown, who's sold real estate in San Antonio for over 23 years. "It's quiet during the day, and it's quiet at night." When residents want a night on the town, the San Antonio River Walk is less than 10 minutes away, but on the day-to-day, they get to enjoy the slower-paced feel of small-town living. Here, single-family homes sit on well-spaced lots liked by oak trees, and downtown development doesn't obstruct the open Texas sky. It's a place where people move when they want to be a bit further out of the city, but still want to live in community.

Proximity to military bases, medical centers and downtown
Interstate 10 runs through Artesia, taking residents downtown in about 15 minutes. Many live here for its proximity to the nearby military bases. "Fort Sam Houston is 10 minutes away," Brown says. "It's close to all the bases, medical centers, shopping centers." Nearby medical facilities include the Brooke Army Medical Center, Mission Trail Baptist Hospital and Gonzaba Medical Group, all within a 15-minute drive of the neighborhood, and the San Antonio International Airport is also about 15 minutes away. VIA Metropolitan Transit serves Artesia residents with bus services that connect them to downtown and throughout San Antonio.
Sit down and enjoy a juicy burger at the Texas Burger Company in Artesia.
Mexican food, BBQ and a nearby H-E-B
Artesia residents dine at local restaurants like Mittman Fine Foods and Restaurante La Morenita, family-owned Mexican restaurants; Texas Burger Company, an old-fashioned, all-American drive-thru; and Orient Express, a counter-service Chinese food spot. For a heaping portion of meat and sides like potato salad and mac and cheese, they head to Skinny Black BBQ and More, and they swing by nearby fast-food chains like Subway, Whataburger and Church's Texas Chicken for something quick on the go. Small markets in the neighborhood, like Amanda Food Mart and Clark Grocery, provide residents access to some groceries, but for an entire trip, most head to the H-E-B just north of the neighborhood. Three miles south of the neighborhood, McCreless Corner is the closest shopping center, home to retailers like Burlington and Marshalls and a movie theater.
Bring the bike out for a smooth ride through the Salado Creek Greenway.
Herrera Park and the Salado Creek Greenway
Many Artesia residents can walk to Herrera Park from their house to play pick-up basketball, let their kids play on the playground or enjoy a picnic under a shady tree. Just east of the neighborhood, various trailheads along Salado Creek have accompanying parks, like the J Street Trailhead and J Street Park and the Covington Park Trailhead. Residents like that J Street Park is clean and well-maintained, and they use the trailhead to head down to Salado Creek and go fishing. The Covington Park Trailhead also has a playground, picnic tables and a bridge leading into the Salado Creek Greenway.

Cozy bungalows under open Texas skies
Housing in Artesia is primarily single-family homes, mostly cozy bungalows with vinyl or brick siding. The neighborhood has some historic homes like Craftsmen, but there are also some newer builds in modern styles. A walk through Artesia is quiet and calm: homes are well-spaced on fenced-in lots, and some neighbors sit on their porches to say hi to neighbors walking and jogging down the sidewalk. Artesia doesn't have the dense urban development that's found closer to downtown, so residents enjoy the serenity of open blue skies above them, and sprawling oak trees adorn front lawns and occasional empty lots. The neighborhood is currently constructing a new planned community called Dorie Commons, where buyers can purchase newly built homes with modern amenities. Prices in Artesia tend to fall between $100,000 and $250,000 for a two- to three-bedroom home, depending on its age and condition, with a median of $125,000.
