Revitalized San Antonio neighborhood with a legendary name
While it is named after King Arthur’s legendary kingdom, San Antonio’s Camelot I did not always have a favorable reputation in the city. Until around the mid-2010s, trash build-up in the neighboring, unincorporated Camelot II community made the entire area filled with rubbish. “Camelot II isn’t technically part of San Antonio, so there wasn’t any city trash pick up, and it got bad,” says Melissa Sawyer, a volunteer for the San Antonio Water Board. “At one point, kids couldn’t play outside.” After Bexar County started a trash pick-up program around Camelot II, the area not only became cleaner but also saw a decrease in crime. Today, the original Camelot I neighborhood has many bright spots, including proximity to Fort Sam Houston Joint Base San Antonio and the independent city of Windcrest, unique local restaurants, stand-out schools, and fast access to Interstates 35 and 410.
Camelot I
Camelot I streets named after Arthurian legends
In Camelot I, there are mainly ranch homes built between the 1960s and 1970s that have been remodeled within the past 10 years. “As people have cleaned up the neighborhood, they’ve remodeled a lot of the homes,” Sawyer says. “The community has come together to fix them up and make everything a lot better.” These simple homes have addresses that play off the “Camelot” theme of the neighborhood – with streets named after Excalibur, Merlin and the Round Table. These Arthurian-themed roads are built on flat land that is filled with easily traversable sidewalks, and many streets are filled with native trees and scrubs alongside personal gardens. These properties usually cost between $200,000 and $300,000. Camelot I has a CAP Index Crime Score of 6, which is higher than the national average score of 4. The CAP Index also scores the neighborhood a 7 for burglary and theft.

Southern comfort food on Walzem Road
Walzem Road, one of Camelot I’s major thoroughfares, is also where most of the stores in the area can be found. Walmart, H-E-B, and several chain restaurants and coffee shops are all along this road. Two of the area’s most popular restaurants are also located here. Mr. A-Ok’s Kitchen, a family-owned and operated eatery, specializes in homemade Southern comfort food, including chicken fried steak, meatloaf and banana pudding. Mrs. Kitchen Soul Food also focuses on Southern cuisine, and its menu is packed with pork chops, oxtails and baked ribs.

Camelot is zoned within the North East Independent School District, and three schools are located right inside the neighborhood. Camelot Elementary and Roosevelt High School have B grades on Niche, while White Middle School is B-plus rated. Niche also ranked Roosevelt High School in the top 10 stand-out high schools in San Antonio for its signature programs – the Design and Technology Academy and the Space and Engineering Technologies Academy. The Design and Technology Academy offers courses in animation, graphic design and video game production, while the Space and Engineering Technologies Academy partners with NASA so enrolled students can earn industry certifications before their high school graduation. There are multiple options for students looking to earn a degree close to home, as Camelot I is within 5 miles of Northeast Lakeview College and within 10 miles of San Antonio College, St. Philip’s College and Trinity University.

Windcrest shares its parks with the entire region
Within Camelot I, there is only one small community park—Camelot Park on Merlin Drive. The park is a centering point for the area’s three main houses of worship—Camelot Christian Center on Ray Bon Drive, Wheatley Heights First Baptist Church on Midcrown Drive and Lien Hoa Buddhist Temple on Excalibur Drive. The neighboring city of Windcrest offers several other recreation options less than a mile away from Camelot I, including a large duck pond at Brook Falls Park on Windrock Drive and a 9-hole public course at The Windcrest Golf Club on Midcrown Drive. Less than 3 miles north of Windcrest, Morgan’s Wonderland on David Edwards Drive is one of Houston’s most beloved theme parks.
Walzem Road runs through Camelot I which serves as on of the main retail and traveled roads.
A short drive from downtown and Fort Houston
Bordered by Interstates 35 and 410, Camelot I has multiple high-speed routes to get around the city. The bustling downtown area is only 10 miles south, making it easy to get to some of the most popular businesses, restaurants, and museums in the area. The San Antonio International Airport is 8 miles away from Camelot I via Loop 410, and Fort Sam Houston is 6 miles away on I-35. For locals who do not drive, there are also several VIA Transit bus stops on Walzem Road and Ray Bon Drive, two of the area’s major roads.
