Residents take a walk through history at Comanche Lookout Park.
Parkside living in northeast San Antonio
The star of the Comanche Lookout Park community is the park itself, which includes a historic Native American vantage point towering over this residential area in northeast San Antonio. While this elevated area once allowed people thousands of years ago to hunt mammoths, the stone tower is now the center of a popular recreation spot surrounded by tranquil walking trails. The community of Comanche Lookout Park also includes retail and restaurants along Nacogdoches Road and on either side of the 1604 Loop. The Loop connects San Antonians to commuting destinations across the greater metro area. “A lot of people who live here work in San Marcos or in Austin,” says Katie Griffin-Ross, San Antonio native and third-generation Realtor at RE/MAX Associates. Comanche Lookout Park is also “a straight shot up I-35 to Texas State University and to the University of Texas at Austin.”
A shaded ranch-style home is a common sight in Comanche Lookout Park.
Brick and ranch-style San Antonio homes
Neighborhood streets have sidewalks, driveways, streetlamps and landscaped lawns. Older subdivisions include ranch-style homes below $300,000 featuring side-gabled and hipped roofs. Newer subdivisions include one and two-story single-family homes ranging from the $300,000s to the $500,000s. At the top of the price range are four-bed, four-bath new traditional homes featuring turrets, arched entryways and built-in garages.
Students can learn and make friends at Wood Middle School.
Within the North East Independent School District
“Comanche Lookout Park belongs to the North East Independent School District, one of the two largest districts in the area, which means it services lots of houses and gets lots of funding,” Griffin-Ross says. The community includes Fox Run Elementary School, rated A-minus on Niche, and Wood Middle School, rated B. Madison High School gets a B from Niche. Its Agriscience Magnet Program caters to students drawn to careers in agriculture, veterinary medicine and plant science.
Locals enjoy the view over Comanche Ridge atop Comanche Lookout Park.
Views from Comanche Lookout Park
The namesake park of the neighborhood is located right in the center of the community. Comanche Lookout Park offers miles of trails to explore, with several leading to the lookout tower. This hill is the fourth-highest point in Bexar County at 1,340 feet. Within the park, Semmes Library features unobstructed views through its 20-foot window wall overlooking the natural area. For a smaller park experience, Raintree Park is home to a playground and a half-mile walking trail.
Rolling Oaks Mall contains clothes retailers.
Shopping and dining at Rolling Oaks Mall
Locals can head to several popular restaurants in the Comanche Lookout Park community. Pompeii Italian Grill is the place to go for authentic Italian cuisine, like chicken piccata and manicotti. Los Generales is the choice local spot for Tex-Mex dishes and margaritas. Walmart Supercenter keeps the area supplied with groceries and everyday essentials. Right across the 1604 Loop, the Rolling Oaks Mall includes several big box stores, including Macy’s, Dillard’s, JCPenney and more. Comanche Lookout Park is about 4 miles from more shopping, dining and entertainment at Live Oak Town Center, The Forum and Village Oaks Shopping Center. Here, locals can find Target, Starbucks and The Home Depot.
Loop 1604 and I-35 converge near Comanche Lookout Park.
Easy access to the 1604 Loop and Interstate 35
“Another draw to living in Comanche Lookout Park is that it’s close to San Antonio International Airport, but without as much air traffic,” Griffin-Ross says. The airport is about 10 miles away. As far as other public transportation goes, there are no bus stops in the community. However, it is feasible to walk or bike to the shops and restaurants, though it will likely require getting on Nacogdoches Road. This thoroughfare does not have a bike lane, but it does have a sidewalk on one side. Of San Antonio’s universities, the closest is University of the Incarnate Word, less than 2 miles away. The nearest hospital is Methodist Hospital Northeast, about 3 miles south on Toepperwein Road. And with proximity to the 1604 Loop and Interstate 35, residents have an easy commute in or out of town.

Community gatherings
Rolling Oaks Mall hosts events throughout the year, like Cartoonapalooza, a celebration of Saturday morning cartoons, and Monster-Con, a horror-themed convention. Locals can also catch a movie at the Regal in Live Oak. For faith-based community gatherings, the area is served by various Christian churches and a couple of nearby Buddhist temples.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
