Housing in East San Antonio is mostly newly built two-story contemporary traditional-style homes, often with brick, vinyl or limestone siding, and many have front-facing garages. Most homes have three to five bedrooms and belong to planned communities. Since the area has only recently been developed and sits away from denser urban areas, residents in East San Antonio enjoy wide streets and plenty of open Texas sky. Plus, “as higher home prices have hit major cities like San Antonio and New Braunfels, Converse is still seen as affordable, especially for younger families,” Lee says. Prices start around $200,000 for a three-bedroom home and get as high as $500,000 for a multiunit investment property. The median price in East San Antonio is about $280,000.
Transportation options in East San Antonio
East San Antonio sits along Interstate 10, which connects to Interstates 410 and 35 to take residents to downtown San Antonio. “Major road expansions are planned along Loop 1604 and IH10 by TxDOT,” Lee says. The closest hospital to the neighborhood is Brooke Army Medical Center, about six miles northwest, and the nearest airport is the San Antonio International Airport, 15 miles northwest. San Antonio’s VIA Metropolitan Transit serves Converse with a bus route that connects residents to downtown San Antonio.
Homestyle Mexican food and shopping at Walmart and H-E-B
There’s no shortage of homestyle Mexican food around East San Antonio, with dining options like El Sabrosito Mexican Restaurant and Dos Jaliscos Mexican Restaurant, both neighborhood favorites for Mexican eats in a laidback setting. For a sweet treat, residents head to La Popular Bakery & Taqueria, which serves pan dulce and other Mexican pastries, or Tropicana Ice Cream, which serves ice cream, mangonadas and other snacks and drinks. Most get groceries at the neighborhood H-E-B and get the rest of their shopping done at Walmart.
Spending time outside in Converse
To spend time outside, locals hang out at Converse City Park, an ample open space with walking and biking paths, a playground, sports fields and a picnic area. It’s also home to the Converse Swimming Pool, where residents cool off in the summertime. Nearby, Northampton Park is another popular option, with tree-lined trails, a playground and a splash pad. West of the neighborhood, Sunrise Park and Miller Ranch Park offer additional recreational activities, the former featuring large oak trees and a walking trail that loops the park and the latter having a smaller walking trail along with a playground and plenty of room for dogs to play.
School choice in Judson ISD
Judson Independent School District offers a School of Choice program that allows families to choose any school within the district to attend. Public schools in East San Antonio include Converse Elementary, Escondido Elementary, James L. Masters Elementary, Henry Metzger Middle and Karen Wagner High, which is also home to the Thunderbird STEM Academy. All of these schools received C ratings or higher on the educational review site, Niche. IDEA Converse, a charter school for kindergarten through ninth-grade students, is also in the neighborhood.Night In Ole Converse Parade and programming at the public library
Converse has an annual Night In Ole Converse Parade, where residents can apply to participate in the parade and compete for awards in different entry categories. Throughout the year, the Converse Public Library builds community with ongoing programming like book clubs, seed swaps and preschool story times.
