Transition between the city center and Far West San Antonio
Greater Gardendale, a triangle-shaped neighborhood just off U.S. Route 90, is a transitional point between western San Antonio and the further-out Far West Side. This pocket of the Alamo City is mainly residential, but visitors will also find popular Mexican eateries and tidy communities of small homes. The area is 8 miles from the Lackland Air Force base, and the general area has grown popular with active service members and their families. More residents coming to the neighborhood has also resulted in multiple new businesses, restaurants and entertainment venues. “Everything here is so new. In the last decade, the west side has been one of the fastest-growing parts of San Antonio. My family and I have seen businesses, shops, and restaurants come in to serve the people who live here,” says Greg Foster, Real Estate Team Leader of Market Boss through eXp Realty who lives in western San Antonio.

VIA Transit provides easy access to various destinations throughout Greater Gardendale.
VIA transit routes run locally and into downtown
Greater Gardendale is about 7 miles from downtown San Antonio. U.S. Route 90 is the closest highway into the city, and Interstates 10 and 35 are also just a few miles outside of the neighborhood. Public transportation from VIA transit is available in most parts of the area, including major roads like Ceralvo Street, South General McMullen Drive and Castroville Road. These transit routes travel directly into the metro, as well as to nearby attractions like the Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium. Greater Gardendale is also conveniently located halfway between San Antonio International Airport and Stinson-Mission Municipal Airport, which are both less than 15 miles away.
Greater Gardendale packs homes into tight lots
Housing in Greater Gardendale mainly consists of apartments and single-family properties from the 1940s. These older Craftsman and ranch-style homes are usually small, with an average size of around 1,000 square feet, and are built in neat rows and with fenced-in, narrow yards. Sidewalks are common in the residential parts of Greater Gardendale but are broken up by mature trees and power poles. Most homes are built very close together, so privacy can be hard to find. “If I hear someone say that they like a little more space between their neighbors, I know the West Side probably isn’t for them,” Foster says. Residences in Greater Gardendale range between $150,000 to $250,000.
