Just north of San Antonio sits Greater Harmony Hills, a community that’s great for folks who are always on the go as well as those who are ready to settle down. Easy access to US Highway 281 and Route 410 cuts commutes, allowing residents to spend more time at home than in the car.

Greater Harmony Hills offers suburban enclaves tucked between commercial roads. Ranch-style homes built in the 1960s are separated from their neighbors by skinny side yards, and large, shady trees overlook the sidewalks. Wide streets increase the neighborhood’s walkability. The median home price in the neighborhood is $343,250, with larger homes running in the upper $400,000 range. Houses have modest front yards, uniform driveways, open floor plans and shaded patios, with many including pools. Two-story homes are hard to come by; however, condos are available and range from the mid-$100,000s to lower $200,000s. “Homes in the area sell faster than other areas with more inventory because of the affordability,” says Devin Resendez, a Realtor with Keller Williams Legacy. “You can get larger lots for a lower price when compared to things close to the city.”

Students here can attend Jackson Keller Elementary School and Eisenhower Middle School, which both earn a B rating from Niche, then finish their K-12 journey at Churchill High School, which Niche gives an A-minus rating. As part of Texas’s North East Independent School District, students may elect to enroll in a bilingual education program and attend a campus in the district that caters to native Spanish speakers. Other schools include faith-based Holy Spirit Catholic School, which educates students from Pre-K to eighth grade and BASIS San Antonio Primary, which serves students K-5 and follows a STEM-infused, liberal arts program.

For coffee in the morning, head to What’s Brewing Coffee Roasters to get a latte with a side of pinball. Burlap sacks of coffee beans sit beside pinball machines, and customers can watch from couches or small tables as baristas brew their coffee in-house. On certain nights, the coffee shop hosts pinball leagues for beginners, professionals, or children on their vast collection of machines, ranging from classic to modern. For Texan cuisine, Two Bros BBQ Market is a rustic, casual spot whose long picnic tables are shaded by Spanish Moss. The small, yellow building with a playground serves authentic barbecue and other southern favorites, like banana pudding and potato salad.

Chat with neighbors at Harmony Hills Cabana Club, which features a six-lane, 25-yard swimming pool with diving wells and a kiddie pool. Children join the club’s swim team—the Dolphins— while parents enjoy their time on one of the tennis or sand volleyball courts. The club offers a shaded picnic area with barbecue grills and a party room to accommodate larger groups.

Go for a run or walk your dog at Walker Ranch Historic Landmark Park, which has a playground, picnic areas and numerous walking trails, including the Salado Creek Greenway, which contains nearly 25 miles of paved trail along San Antonio’s east side and forms an off-road loop around the city’s heart. Inside the park is Walker Ranch Senior Center, a 26,000-square-foot community designed to accommodate seniors. The center offers transportation to and from the campus, daily lunch, a computer lab, exercise rooms, a central dining hall and activity space for senior-specific activities.

Just 11 miles from downtown San Antonio, Greater Harmony Hills teems with commercial accessibility. Visit La Plaza Del Norte to find various big-box stores and chain restaurants, or stop by one of the five nearby Walmarts to buy groceries. For commuters and those who travel, the neighborhood is conveniently located by US Highway 281, Route 410 and the San Antonio International Airport. Bus routes run along the main roads. Whatever your demands, Greater Harmony Hills’ convenient location ensures everything you need is just off your street.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
