Harlandale
Mission San Jose is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Harlandale Park on Briar Place is home to a community center that serves as a hub for outreach, events and youth sports. Further south on March Avenue, Stinson Park offers ball fields used by the S.A. Five Diamonds, one of the Southside's only Little Leagues. Espada Park, just outside the neighborhood, is set along the San Antonio River and connected to the San Antonio Mission Trails, a 14-mile network leading through all five city missions. The nearest is Mission San Jose, part of Texas' only UNESCO World Heritage Site. "We are really attached to Mission San Jose because the first residents of this area started what is now known as Harlandale ISD. We have history literally in our backyard," Cavazos says. The Mission Library is nearby, hosting calligraphy courses, table tennis and story time events.Tech savvy students can apply to STEM Early College High
The Harlandale Independent School District plays a significant role in preserving the neighborhood culture. "We have mariachi as early as 3rd grade, and it's offered in every elementary school," Cavazos says. "We have mobile food pantries and hot dinners for students who stay after school for extra-curricular activities." Nearby Bellaire Elementary and Harlandale Middle School earn a C on Niche, while Harlandale High School has a C-plus. Students can apply to STEM Early College High, a public magnet school with a B-plus, home to pathways in robotics and math, biotechnology and science and computer programming. Texas A&M University-San Antonio, 6 miles south of the neighborhood, contributes to the Southside's growth and partners with the district's high schools through their Early College Program.Harlandale is growing with new construction
Neighbors walking their dogs in the morning or sitting on their front porches waving to passersby is a common sight in Harlandale. The streets are lined with big yards and sidewalks. "It's very diverse. There are new modern houses next to quaint, lived-in homes. We don't like to tear older homes down; we like to keep the neighborhood's character," Cavazos says. "Generations have opened these front doors and made memories here." Ranch-style houses with clapboard siding, minimal traditional cottages, and contemporary new constructions sit close together, ranging from 800 to 3,000 square feet. Barbed wire and wooden fences enclose modest backyards dotted with oaks and above-ground pools. Prices range from $125,000 for a fixer-upper built in the 1950s to over $485,000 for a 2023 build. According to the CAP Index, Harlandale's Crime Score is 5 out of 10, slightly higher than the national average of 4. The Harlandale ISD Department actively organizes outreach programs and fundraising events.Harlandale has many local businesses
Harlandale is experiencing growth, with an influx of chain businesses like Dutch Bros. However, residents take pride in shopping and dining locally. "I love that we have so many small businesses. A good 90% of our businesses are owned by people who live in the community. We take care of our own," Cavazos says. Rolando's Super Taco on Shasta Avenue is known for its super tacos and breakfast offerings. Bobbie's Cafe has been serving country-style meals on South Flores Street since 1972. B&B Smokehouse offers plates of smoked meats, and El Chango Loco's menu features treats like mangonadas and ice cream sundaes. Southwest Military Drive houses shopping centers and grocery stores like H-E-B and Walmart Supercenter.Celebrating heritage at the Cultural Arts Parade
Harlandale ISD's Cultural Arts Parade is a beloved event celebrating the Southside's pride in their heritage. "Last year, we had the biggest number of parade entries. It's not just residents; local businesses participate too," Cavazos says. From Mission San Jose, homemade floats cruise down the community to Mission Marquee Plaza, where the fiesta continues with fair, live mariachi music and local vendors. The Mission Marquee Plaza, once known as Mission Drive-In, has developed into a popular event space that hosts movie nights and a farmers market every third Saturday.Easy access to bus stops and Interstate 35
Military Drive separates Harlandale from the McCollum neighborhood. Harlandale offers easy access to Interstate 35, I-37, I-410 and I-10. Bus stops operated by VIA Metro are found along Pleasanton Road and Southwest Military Drive. Mission Trail Baptist Hospital is 4 miles away and is a major employer in the area. The San Antonio International Airport is 16 miles north. Stinson Airport, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the second oldest continuously operated airport in the United States, is nearby. Harlandale Baptist Church, founded in 1922, offers food and clothing ministries.
