Kingsborough Ridge
Meeting the community at the Cultural Arts Parade
Harlandale Independent School District's Cultural Arts Parade is highly anticipated in the community. The district is a staple in the Southside, with many neighbors acting as volunteers and taking part in organizing. This annual fiesta begins early in the morning with a car parade at Mission San Jose. Live music performances, traditional dances and local vendors honor the deep appreciation of the area's history. Mission Marquee Plaza on Roosevelt Avenue hosts an outdoor film series throughout the seasons. The plaza is a former drive-in movie theater now a central gathering place in the Southside. Every other Saturday, local artists and vendors show out for a farmers and artisan market.Exploring history at the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park
Many locals grew up going swimming at Kingsborough Park on Felps Boulevard. This tradition has continued with their kids coming to cool off in the summer. Bellaire Park is a small green space with a playground for games of tennis close to home. Just 2 miles north, Stinson Park has been updated with new trees, paved parking and shaded fields thanks to a local Little League. S.A. 5 Diamonds is one of the Southside's only Little Leagues. "I played there when I was little," says Elaine Ortiz, a board member of the S.A. Five Diamonds Little League for the last ten years and lifetime resident. "Much hadn't changed until my husband and I got involved. But we put cement under the bleachers. Now grandma and grandpa in wheelchairs can cheer on their grandkids without tripping over a rock or something." Southside Little Cowboys is a non-profit organization that brings youth together through football and cheerleading. About 5 miles west, San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is Texas' only UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park offers access to The Mission Trails that lead through five other missions. Mitchell Lake is just 5 miles south for warm weather fun.Living close to parks in Kingsborough Ridge
Rocking chairs, hanging plants and shrubbery sway in the wind in Kingsborough Ridge. Locals are within walking distance of schools, parks and neighborhood pools. Wide streetscapes make way for brick and salmon-shaded ranch-style houses where generations have lived. Sidewalks lead past barbed wire and wrought-iron fences enclosing modestly sized yards. While many residents have garages or covered driveways, pick-up trucks and minivans are parked on the street. New constructions in the neighborhood's southeastern corridor are built in Contemporary Craftsman styles. Constructed by KB Home, these properties offer semi-custom design plans and community amenities. Prices can range from $225,000 for a home built in 1960 to over $375,000 for 2023 builds.Students can apply to STEM Early College High School
The Harlandale Independent School District educates just over 12,000 students and earns a B-minus grade on Niche. Many residents have seen the district grow over the years. "My husband and I were both born and raised in the Southside. We graduated from McCullom, and so did our kids," Ortiz says. In 2024, Harland ISD won 12 awards at the state-wide Star Awards Ceremony, highlighting the district's commitment to print and electronic media communication. Kingsborough Ridge is home to Schulze Elementary School and Kingsborough Middle School, both with C grades. McCollum High School garners a B-minus grade. STEM Early College High School is a public magnet institution centered around robotics, math and computer programs. Students can also take dual enrollment classes and earn an associate degree through a partnership with Texas A&M-San Antonio, a public university whose campus opened in 2009.Mission Open Air Market hosts nearly 2,000 vendors
Locals appreciate supporting small, family-owned businesses. Judy's on Roosevelt Avenue is a nostalgic cornerstone for comforting plates of authentic Mexican cuisine. Bobbie's Cafe on South Flores Street is the go-to spot for a big weekend breakfast. El Chango Loco has offered sweet treats like mangonadas and Tamarindo apples for over 25 years. For bargain shopping, Mission Open Air Market is a giant outdoor flea market open three times a week. "It's like a trader's village, with a lot of vendors," says Del Fierro. Dollar General is in the neighborhood, and H-E-B, Walmart and several shopping centers are within a 5-mile radius. The Rim is San Antonio's central shopping hub, offering over 100 retailers and restaurants 24 miles north.Get around San Antonio easy with Loop 410
