Housing subdivisions near commercial destinations
Built on a former stockyard area, San Antonio’s Longhorn neighborhood combines a residential heart with commercial conveniences. The site was developed into subdivisions in the 1970s but has a much longer history. In fact, just off of Perrin Beitel Road is the Perrin House, a cabin built in 1845 that was made into a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1968. Close to Loop 410, Interstate 35 and Wurzbach Parkway, the 13 miles to downtown flash by. It’s only 7 miles from the San Antonio International Airport and two from the Beitel Creek hiking trailhead. Bus stops can be found along Perrin Beitel and the I-35 Frontage Roads.
Shopping and dinning with ease at Oasis Shopping Center
Living in Longhorn gives residents access to numerous stores, like Academy Sports, and shopping complexes, like Oasis Shopping Center. There are also plenty of spots to quiet a hungry belly. La Tapatia #5 is a Mexican restaurant that forgoes frills in favor of flavor. It sells breakfast burritos all day, along with tostadas, fajitas and carnitas. Kain Na Filipino Cuisine takes its name from the Filipino phrase for “Let’s Eat.” The restaurant has karaoke on Friday nights, and guests can bring their own wine or spirits to accompany the meal. Roasted eggplant, crispy pork belly and garlic rice are served in a welcoming environment, and there’s even a small attached market for Filipino and Asian ingredients.

Relaxing in ranch-style homes and apartments
“Longhorn is in a side of town that's growing quickly, and all the new businesses and houses are drawing people that way. Depending on where you are in the area, there may not even be any city taxes,” says David Romero, a Realtor with The Emery Group and longtime San Antonio resident. “There are a lot of different kinds of houses in the area. There’s modern and contemporary but lots of ranch styles and Craftsmans, too. And the community is very open and friendly. Everybody tries to help each other.” There’s more than one kind of housing in the area, with apartment complexes, townhouses, and single-family homes. Set back from the street, the dwellings have large yards, and many are landscaped with mature trees and shrubs. There aren’t many sidewalks in the residential areas, so residents must be aware of drivers while strolling. Prices range from $200,000 for a three-bedroom mid-century-style house to $430,000 for a five-bedroom 1970s ranch-style residence with an in-ground pool.

Owned by the North East Independent School District, Heroes Stadium acts as the home field for numerous local schools. The 11,000-seat open-style stadium and parking lot occupy 58 acres just next to Wurzbach Parkway and was built on the abandoned site of Longhorn Quarry. Opened in 2009, the complex is home to an athletic field and track as well as support and ticket facilities, stadium offices and a press box.
Heading to Kallison Park for some fun outside
Located in the neighborhood’s center, Kallison Park is a green space with plenty of room to move. There are open areas and a multipurpose field for pick-up soccer games, while softball players have their own lot to play on. Partially bordered by trees, the park offers residents shady spots to sit or play basketball on the half-court. Those who bike to the park will find a dedicated cycle rack alongside water fountains and a picnic area with a grill.
