It’s right in the name – San Antonio’s Medical Center is home to the city’s largest hospitals. The South Texas Medical Center, consisting of UT Health San Antonio and Methodist Hospital, is one of the largest hospitals in the United States and is across the street from CHRISTUS Santa Rose Hospital and Audie L. Murphy VA Medical Center. The concentration of well-respected medical institutions has made this pocket of Houston popular among healthcare professionals who want a short commute. The area also stands out for its thriving culinary scene and memorable local parks that attracts visitors from across the city. “Downtown is the center of the city, but if I had to say there was another place that San Antonio is built around, it’s the Medical Center,” says Henry Herrera, a San Antonio native and Realtor with Keller Williams. “You can get anywhere in San Antonio within 10 to 15 minutes. It’s almost like a second downtown.”

The flavors of the Medical Center
The Medical Center is named after its hospitals, but locals know the area for its restaurants. Louis Pasteur Drive, next to UT Health San Antonio, has three of the area’s most popular eateries in one place. Suck It: The Restaurant Drive focuses on Asian fusion with pho, rice bowls, ramen and bubble tea. Sandwiches De Paris employs a team of chefs who bake fresh bread daily, which serves as the base for French-inspired creations. Bakery Lorraine, known for its sandwiches and pastries, was named one of the best bakeries in the country by Food and Wine in 2020.
The neighborhood is surrounded by several large shopping complexes—Huebner Oaks Center and Colonnade III on Interstate 10 and The Village at the Summit to the south on Interstate 410. In addition to multiple restaurants, clothing shops, and attractions like a trampoline park and movie theaters, these malls have everyday needs like an H-E-B and Sam’s Club. The area surrounding the Medical Center also has the Islamic Center of San Antonio, the only Islamic center in the city, on Fairhaven Street, and the Sikh Center of San Antonio, the oldest Gurdwara in San Antonio, on Hollyhock Road.

Situated between Interstates 10 and 410
I- 410 – known to locals as Loop 410 – runs along the southern side of the Medical Center. This highway also connects to I-10, which is the fastest way to reach downtown San Antonio, about 10 miles away. Loop 410 additionally provides a fast route to San Antonio International Airport, 9 miles away. Drivers benefit from infrastructure that is built to handle an influx of daily commuters. “Traffic is not as bad as other places in the city,” says Valeria Sisson, a real estate agent with eXP Realty and a former teacher at San Antonio’s North East Independent School District. “They’ve made some changes, and there’s an underbridge and an overbridge where it gets really clogged up that has really smoothed things out.” There is a specialized Medical Park and Ride station for buses on Babcock Road, and VIA Transit buses weave through Fredericksburg Road and Medical Drive throughout the day.

For patients or employees who want a scenic walk, the Medical Center Field on Floyd Curl Drive connects to the San Antonio Medical Foundation Walking and Jogging Trail and loops between all the major hospitals. Denman Estate Park is just outside the main medical hub on Mockingbird Lane and is a draw for visitors to the area. The park's jewel is The Pavilion of Gwang-Ju, a traditional pagoda that was a gift from Gwang-Ju, South Korea, San Antonio’s sister city. The Oak Hills Country Club on Fredericksburg Road is close enough to the Medical Center that club members can walk between the club and the Methodist Hospital. The club is known for its 18-hole golf course surrounded by oak trees, as well as tennis courts and two private restaurants.
