Medina Lake is an exurban community in south San Antonio where suburban streets meet the wide-open countryside of south-central Texas. The area is growing quickly with planned developments whose backyards and cul-de-sacs peek out into the airy flatlands and woodsy scenery beyond the city limits. It’s bordered by the waterside hiking trails at the Medina River Natural Area and by the tiny town of Somerset, which offers residents a taste of small-town Americana. Lackland Air Force Base, a major regional employer, is north of the neighborhood. “There are a lot of new communities being built here. People are really gravitating towards the south and southwestern side as the city continues to grow,” says Rodney Green of Exp Realty, who has a decade of experience working in San Antonio’s real estate market. “It’s right next to the freeway, about 15 miles from downtown and 10 miles from the Air Force base.”

Countryside homes with privacy
At the northern edge of the neighborhood, residents will find an abundance of new homes in planned communities like the Preserve at Medina, Mesa Vista and Marbella. These newly built homes come in a range of sizes and floorplans, with everything from small, three-bedroom bungalows to spacious four- and five-bedroom homes with attached garages and open concept designs. Lot sizes are small, typically around 5,000 square feet, but you’ll still have plenty of room for landscaping and gardening. Homes here typically list for between $225,000 and $315,000. As you head south, there are homes on large parcels of land deep in the countryside. These homes are typically older and offer residents plenty of privacy and room to roam. They can sell for a little less than their counterparts in nearby subdivisions, usually around $200,000, although prices fluctuate based on age, acreage and square footage.
Southwest Legacy High School is the newest high school to the area.

Also nearby is Cast STEM High School, a local charter school that holds a B rating from Niche.
Medina Lake has many highway access points like Palo Alto Road and Loop 1604.

Hop on the highway and it’s about 15 miles to downtown destinations like the San Antonio River Walk, sports venues and art museums. It's also about 10 miles from Lackland Air Force Base, where tens of thousands of civilian and active-duty employees go to work every day.
Shopping at South Park Mall
Benjamin’s Kitchen, a family-owned Mexican restaurant, is one of the few eateries in the neighborhood. For everything else, you can head about 10 miles north to the shops, big box stores and restaurants at South Park Mall, a long-running indoor shopping center where residents will find everything they need. Inside the mall, shops like Macy’s and JCPenney offer clothing and accessories for all ages. In the outparcels, shoppers can fill their baskets at big box stores and grocery chains like H-E-B Plus!, The Home Depot, Target and Sam’s Club. For a small-town experience, it’s just a few miles south to the village of Somerset, where locals can stop off for an espresso at Somerset Coffeehaus or put in an order at Constantino’s, the town’s long-running pizzeria.

GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
