North of Fort Sam Houston, Near East Side is a collection of subdivisions bordered by Interstate 410 to the east. Subdivisions in this neighborhood include General Krueger, Serna Station, Salado Valley, East Terrell Hills and Wilshire. “The subdivisions are conveniently located and affordable,” says Melissa Muse Wiggans, broker/owner of Real Estate Muses. “They have excellent access to the San Antonio Salado Greenway walking trails, and several parks.”

Houses include established ranch and contemporary-style houses from the late 1950s and 60s. Active listings are likely homes that have been recently remodeled, with updated interiors. Recent closing sale prices range from $200,000 for a remodeled ranch-style house with 1,800 square feet of living space, to $295,000 for a remodeled ranch-style house with 3,400 square feet of living space. Residential streets closer to area schools and stores are more likely to have sidewalks, making it easy for students to walk to school, or to reach shopping and dining options on Austin Highway or Rittiman Road. Public transportation is available on most of the busier residential streets in the area, excluding the south side subdivisions like Salado Valley and East Terrell Hills.

Students can attend East Terrell Hills Elementary School, Krueger Middle School and Roosevelt High School. Depending on where you live, you might be in walking distance of the elementary or middle school. Roosevelt High, graded B on Niche, offers Advanced Placement, Dual Credit and Dual Enrollment classes. Students can also apply to participate in magnet programs like the Space and Engineering Technologies Academy (SETA). George Gervin Academy, a K-12 public charter school graded B on Niche, is also an option.

When it’s time for grocery shopping, you’ll find H-E-B at Sunset Square Shopping Center on Austin Highway, near George Gervin Academy and a Walmart Supercenter. Target and Ross are just past the Walmart for retail shopping. There are also several specialty stores in the area, including La Michoacana Supermarket, the Korean Market and Seoul Asian Market and Cafe.

You’ve got several dining options to choose from in the area. “Big Bib Barbeque is a neighborhood staple for dining,” says Wiggans. Established in 2000, The Big Bib BBQ started out at a car wash on the East side of San Antonio. Once a one-man operation, The Big Bib has grown to have a clientele from individuals to corporations, and to operate out of two larger locations. As their website claims, “We are synonymous with Texas Barbeque!” You can order meats like sausage, brisket and chicken by the pound, or in plated meals with two sides. Sandwiches and catfish are also options. Down the road is The Longhorn Cafe, a small chain restaurant that started as a small taco stand in the 1950s. Home of the “Original Big Juicy” burger, it’s the place to go to enjoy a variety of burgers, sandwiches like a chicken fried steak sandwich, and dinner plates, in a laid-back atmosphere.

For outdoor fun, you can reach the 90-acre John James Park in less than 10 minutes by car. Kids can enjoy the cushioned playground, and there’s a walking trail with fitness stations you can use for an outdoor workout. The Jack White Park Trailhead is about the same distance away, where you can hike or bike the Salado Creek Greenway. In 15 minutes you can reach beautiful Brackenridge Park, the second oldest public park in San Antonio.

For affordable housing in walking distance of area schools, shopping and dining, Near East Side might be the place for you.
