Northwood Hills
Stately homes alongside new subdivision
Near the corner of Bulverde and Evans roads, you’ll find many large estates, including Mediterranean, contemporary and ranch-style houses. These homes come on large lots with plenty of live oaks separating the houses from the road and gated driveways for extra privacy. Other areas of the neighborhood feature more recent subdivisions that have popped up. These communities typically feature brick and vinyl exteriors, with some stone buildings mixed in. You can find large two-story houses with columns on the front porch or more modest one-story dwellings. Nearly every house comes with a built-in garage. Prices are varied due to the wide range of home styles. Smaller 21st century designs can sell for between $350,000 and $450,000, while larger homes with more room to roam can sell for more than $600,000.Sought-after San Antonio schools
The neighborhood has two schools – Bulverde Elementary School and Tex Hill Middle School — both of which hold A ratings from Niche. The latter is the newest school in the district and is named after fighter pilot David Lee “Tex” Hill. Upperclassmen attend nearby Johnson High School, an A-plus-rated school and one of the best in greater San Antonio, according to Niche. The high school was built relatively recently, in 2008, and offers a wide range of athletic programs and extracurriculars for students to participate in.Shopping is a short drive away
Marketplace at Encino Park, a shopping center on the neighborhood’s northwest corner, offers convenient access to errands, including Smokey Mo’s BBQ. Resident can head to this local chain for brisket and ribs, served by a friendly staff. Sprouts Farmers Market across the street has all your groceries, while Walgreens on Bulverde Road is there for any quick shopping or pharmacy needs. Residents can head about 5 miles west on the 1604 Loop to reach Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Costco, Walmart and Target, and about 14 miles to popular shopping destinations like The Rim at La Cantera, home to several big box stores and a movie theater.Enjoy the outdoors at nearby local parks
For outdoor activities, neighbors can take a short drive to Mud Creek Park, a green space with more than a mile of walking trails through desert panorama. Parents can bring their kids to the colorful playground at Fox Grove Park, nestled within the Fox Grove subdivision. There’s also nearby Friesenhahn Park, where residents enjoy picnic areas, grassy fields and natural scenery. The neighborhood is about 18 miles south of the Natural Bridge Caverns, a popular destination just outside the city where residents and tourists explore the largest commercial caverns in the state.Getting around San Antonio
With proximity to the 1604 Loop and Highway 281, residents have a quick trip throughout the metro area. There are no bus stops in the neighborhood, meaning residents will need a vehicle to get around. It’s about 12 miles to the San Antonio International Airport and about 8 miles to the nearest interstate. Getting to the city’s vibrant downtown is a bit of trek, about 20 miles. Those in need of medical care can travel to Methodist Hospital, west of downtown San Antonio.
