Deep community pride in San Jose
With heavy cultural influences and national historic sites right in their backyards, the residents of the San Antonio neighborhood of San Jose have pride in their community that runs deep. “San Jose’s been making a lot of noise lately, and the people who live there are liking it,” says Kristen Galloway, a longtime resident of San Antonio who frequents the city’s arts and culture scene. “They’re not far from downtown at all, so they’ve got their finger on the pulse of the city,” and with the community being right off Interstate 35, it’s easy to find the way to San Jose.
South Park Mall and the Mayan Theater
Just across I-35, South Park Mall is a virtual one-stop shop for shopping and dining. The area also has big box stores like Target to grab everything from groceries to electronics. There’s an H-E-B Plus! just two blocks from the mall for more extensive grocery shopping. A quick drive down I-35 goes straight into downtown San Antonio, opening even more shopping and fine dining options along the River Walk.

New constructions and established, colorful homes
Open green fields on wide streets categorize the scenery in San Jose. While new builds are slowly reaching the area, older homes are more prevalent, sitting on moderately sized lots with well-manicured lawns. Larger brick ranch-style homes have built-in patios, while smaller ones sit away from the curb with large lawns decorated with trees and some featuring carports. Newer two-story homes come with attached garages and offset entryways, and it’s very common to find most yards in the area fenced in. Price tags in the area are generally in the $100,000s and $200,000s, with new builds ranging from the mid-$200,000s to the high $300,000s.
