Sierra Springs is an established community in suburban San Antonio

Sierra Springs is a well-established residential community in western San Antonio, approximately 18 miles from downtown. Since these homes were mostly built around the turn of the century, people are often attracted to this area for its lived-in atmosphere. Aside from this established feel, Sierra Springs also draws in residents because of its central location near major employers, everyday amenities and academic institutions. “It is a popular area. A lot of people like the schools, and they like the location,” says Jo-Ann Guevara, a local real estate agent with Collective Realty. “And there are a lot of corporate jobs nearby; it’s not too far from places like USAA – which is a big, big insurance company here in San Antonio – or Northwest Vista College, a community college that’s right up the highway.” Sierra Springs has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 3 out of 10, which is just below the national average crime score of 4. Directly north of the neighborhood is SeaWorld San Antonio, a large aquatic theme park with rides and marine animals.

Traditional bungalows range from $230,000 to $350,000

One interesting characteristic of the neighborhood is that the roads here have unique names that usually reference big cats or rocks, like “Cougar Chase,” “Limestone Flats,” “Tiger Paw,” or “Granite Cliff.” And while potential buyers can rest easy knowing they won’t come face-to-face with the King of the Jungle on Lion Chase, they will find an abundance of Traditional-style bungalows with brick and stone facades. Single-family homes in Sierra Springs typically cost between $230,000 and $350,000, which is slightly below San Antonio’s overall housing price range. “The houses are well established, and there are lots of grown trees, which is neat because you don't really see that in the newer communities in San Antonio,” Guevara says. Homes showcase different architectural combinations, so no two houses in Sierra Springs look the same. Most properties here were built in the early 2000s and feature amenities like paved driveways and attached garages, which help mitigate street parking.

Neighborhood residents have access to the Sierra Springs Recreation Center, which has an outdoor swimming pool with several canopies and picnic benches located on the pool deck. On the neighborhood's eastern border is Westover Crossing Park, a small outdoor space with a partially shaded playground and paved walking loop. The Bob Lewis Elementary School campus also has a small playground and recreational blacktop with four square outlines and two basketball courts, and is open to the public when school is not in session. Guevara adds that there’s been a recent push in San Antonio to expand and connect all the community parks, so locals can expect to see more greenway trails and parks popping up in the future.

Getting around western San Antonio and to the downtown area

Two major thoroughfares run on either of Sierra Springs: the Loop 1604 beltway to the west and Highway 151 – also known as the Raymond E. Stotzer Junior Freeway – to the east. Whereas Loop 1604 sprawls throughout the city’s vast metropolitan surroundings, commuters can take Highway 151 to merge onto Interstate 410, a smaller beltway that encircles urban San Antonio. VIA Metropolitan Transit operates bus routes throughout the area, including service to downtown San Antonio. The San Antonio International Airport is approximately 17 miles away. Westover Hills Baptist Hospital and its 24-hour emergency services department are a 3-mile drive north of the neighborhood.
