From railroad stop to residential convenience
Established in 1916, South San Antonio has a history rooted in the early railroad system of the area. Serving as a station on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad in the 1920s and 1930s, the community officially became a part of the city of San Antonio in 1944 and has grown to become an epicenter of shopping and dining and a model of residential convenience.
Mediterranean influences all around
Brick ranch-style homes are the most prominent in South San Antonio, showing up on nearly every block, while some bungalows with larger-than-normal layouts can also be found. “Even with the prevalence of the ranch-style homes, you still find a nice mix of other styles,” says Michael McCall, a lifelong resident of San Antonio and founder of Life in San Antonio Texas Home Group. “Custom builds are also drawing in new residents.” The neighborhood also features more spacious Mediterranean and Spanish Eclectic homes with stucco exteriors, red tile roofs and large bay windows that let in plenty of natural light, and new builds continue to pop up around the neighborhood. All the homes in the area feature attached garages and sit on large lots, giving way to expansive yards for entertaining friends and family outdoors. Prices in the area tend to be in the $200,000s and $300,000s, with new builds starting in the mid-$200,000s.
