Tanglewood
Tanglewood’s suburban setting and Residents Association
Bypassing the hectic business parks and shopping centers on the edges of the neighborhood, a suburban setting quickly appears, with single-family homes lining the neighborhood streets. Well-maintained, tree-shaded front yards and fenced-in backyards are the norm, surrounding contemporary homes with craftsman influences and cross-gabled ranches. These houses, many built in the 1980s and ’90s, are priced from the mid-$200,000s to around $500,000. The Tanglewood Residents Association is a voluntary organization without mandatory HOA fees, but many residents choose to support it with their time and energy, notes McDaniel.Northside Independent School District education
Tanglewood is zoned to the Northside Independent School District, the fourth-largest district in Texas. Most students in the neighborhood will attend Boone Elementary School, which earned a C-plus grade from Niche, before moving on to B-minus-graded Rudder Middle School. Tom C. Clark High School, given an A rating, has a 17-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Just north of the neighborhood is the University of Texas at San Antonio, with some students and professors living in Tanglewood.Exploring the outskirts of the Hill Country
Just west of the neighborhood are Bamberger Nature Park and Fox Park, each with plenty of paths for walking or jogging. The two parks are connected by the Leon Creek Greenway, which is a popular trail for biking and leads all the way north to Eisenhower Park almost 7 miles away. The trail features viewpoints north into the Texas Hill Country. Also on the outskirts of Tanglewood, Spring Time Park features a playground and a public pool open during the summer months. Another popular outdoor area is Raymond Russell Park near the confluence of I-10 and Route 1604. “It’s a great park that people can go to with a playground and plenty of space for a picnic or birthday party,” says Joel Leos, a Realtor with Keller Williams Heritage.Plenty of local favorites around Tanglewood
With a commercial center lining I-10 on the eastern edge of the neighborhood, locals barely have to leave the neighborhood for provisions. Chain restaurants such as Culver’s and McAlister’s Deli are just off De Zavala Road for quick meals. “We’ve got all of the higher-end chains, some steakhouses, Bill Miller BBQ,” McDaniel says. “But everybody here has their own favorite taco shop. There are a bunch of those around the neighborhood.” For groceries and other essentials, Walmart and Sam’s Club lie just north of Tanglewood, with other options such as H-E-B in nearby shopping centers.Quick access across San Antonio
Located in the suburbs of San Antonio, the suburb has easy access to the University of Texas-San Antonio, nearby medical facilities, and businesses downtown. The city center is just 12 miles away via I-10. “That’s one of the main draws of living here,” McDaniel says. “We have professors from UTSA, people who work at the medical center, USAA, it’s all very easy to get to because of the highway.” For further trips, locals can zip over to San Antonio International Airport via Loop 410.
