Westover Hills is new to the Westside scene
Westover Hills might be new, but it’s taking over San Antonio’s Far Westside one block at a time. Retail stores, like Kohl’s, HEB and Target, as well as restaurant chains, have moved in, and it’s all thanks to its rapidly growing housing inventory. “Westside has had this boom of construction between homes and infrastructure,” says Vicki Collier, a Realtor at Keller Williams Legacy. “People who want to stay in San Antonio without actually being in San Antonio are moving here quickly.” Being within reach of the city is far from the only benefit of Westover Hills’ location. One of San Antonio’s biggest employers – Lackland Air Force Base – is within a 10-mile radius, along with SeaWorld, the San Antonio Aquarium and Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium. And when locals want to escape into nature, Texas’ Hill Country is their western neighbor. “Being out closer to gorgeous spots like Boerne and Comfort is also a huge, huge draw for people,” Collier adds.
Creekside, Stonegate Hills and Aviara subdivisions
The housing scene in Westover Hills exploded after 2000, with a majority of current homes built in the past 20 years and a smaller percentage constructed before the 1940s. Many new builds feature brick or stone facades and two-car garages. The Creekside and Stonegate Hills subdivisions offer 2,000-to-3,000-square-foot homes with a price range of $350,000 and $400,000. In the Aviara subdivision, New Traditional homes sit on cul-de-sac lots and wrap around a private golf course. Depending on square footage, the price of a home in this subdivision falls between $500,000 and $700,000.
AFROTC and choir at Warren High School
Northside Independent School District can attend Evers Elementary and Jordan Middle Schools, which share a B-minus Niche score. Warren High School earns a B-plus from Niche and offers an Air Force ROTC program and multiple choral groups, between chamber choir and a cappella. For those interested in continuing their education close to home, The University of Texas at San Antonio is roughly 13 miles away near The Shops at La Cantera.
Westover Hills' methods for beating San Antonio traffic
Many Westover Hills residents work at Lackland Air Force Base or drive 16 miles to San Antonio for work. The city hosts major employers like the University of Texas San Antonio, Methodist Healthcare and USAA. Commuting from the Westover Hills district is relatively easy because of the major traffic arteries that run through the area. The two loops surrounding the greater San Antonio area are easily accessible from one of the major streets in the neighborhood, like Culebra Road or Potranco Road. However, much like the rest of San Antonio, traffic is a problem. “It’s not as bad as Austin or Houston, but it’s definitely an issue for us,” Collier says. “Although, there’s a ton of construction, so it looks like the Westside is actively making improvements.” CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital is located 2 miles outside the neighborhood, and the San Antonio International Airport is 17 miles away.
Not far from La Cantera and The Rim
For dinner close to home, Rudy's "Country Store" and Bar-B-Q is right over Roger Road and well-known for smoked brisket and ribs. The Westwood Shopping Center is home to Target, H-E-B and Walmart, along with chain restaurants, including Olive Garden and 54th Street Scratch, and more local spots, like Lin’s International Buffet. Locals can head to Ingram Park Mall, about 5 miles away, for most department stores. However, The Shops at La Cantera and The Rim, two of San Antonio’s most upscale shopping malls, are a 13-mile drive away on TX-1604. Both outdoor malls offer luxury brands, including Gucci and Louis Vuitton, and highly rated dining spots like Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen and The Rustic, which doubles as a lively music venue in the evenings. “Whiskey Cake is getting popular; it’s a must for brunch,” Collier adds.
Texas' Hill Country is Westover Hills' next door neighbor
Between neighborhood parks, multiple golf courses and rural Texas on Westside’s left, there’s plenty to do outdoors. Just under 4 miles south is Heritage Duck Pond Park, which offers kayak rentals for visitors hoping to catch a glimpse of a turtle’s head poking out from the water. While there’s not much to see at Creekside Community Playground – other than the playground and basketball court – it’s a safe spot outdoors for Westover Hills’ youngest. Vast amounts of rural farmland, sprawling nature parks, shooting ranges and the Golf Club of Texas are 15 to 20 miles west. Government Canyon State Natural Park, on Galm Road and 10 miles away, offers dog-friendly walking trails and guided hikes around the canyon. And when a weekend calls for fishing, boating or camping, Medina Lake is 27 miles away.
SeaWorld and San Antonio Missions games
Westover Hills residents are very rarely without something to do. Baseball fans can enjoy San Antonio Missions games 7 miles away at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium. SeaWorld and the San Antonio Aquarium are 5 miles away for sea life fun. During the holiday season, the Westover Sports Complex glows during the Westover Field of Lights, an annual Christmas exhibition featuring over 300,000 synchronized lights. With its proximity to downtown San Antonio, many residents travel to the city for various events. Rodeo season begins in February at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, and Fiesta San Antonio is another big draw. This 10-day festival brings the whole city together for a parade, vendors and live performances.
