Woodlawn Lake
National-style is in style
The community is full of spacious single-family homes — mostly bungalows with front patios and side entrances, and national-style houses featuring second-story terraces that hover over first-story front patios. Wood siding is common, with brick and stone exteriors also being popular choices. Contemporary and shed-style homes are also scattered throughout the neighborhood. The homes’ fenced-in yards are well-maintained and accented with flourishing trees, and some homes even feature carports as opposed to garages. New builds are starting to be introduced to the area, starting in the $500,000s, however, pricing generally ranges from the $200,000s to the $400,000s.Woodlawn Lake Park has it all
As the center of the neighborhood, the actual Woodlawn Lake has become a major recreation center for residents. Sports enthusiasts can get in a game of basketball or a tennis match at the sports courts, while others can get some steps in with a walk or run around the lake. “The lake itself is such a central part of this community,” says Michael McCall, founder of Life in San Antonio Texas Home Group. “The community was built around the lake, and it continues to grow, keeping the lake as the focal point.” That walk or run can be extended on the Alazan Creek Trail, which runs 3 miles south to Apache Creek. Fitness equipment is located along the trail for a full-body workout. The park also houses a community center, which offers free internet access and a gym, as well as playgrounds and a swimming pool. The lighthouse in the center of the lake is purely aesthetic and has become something of a local landmark.Independence Day at the lake
As one of the biggest celebrations in San Antonio, the Fourth of July is always hosted at Woodlawn Lake Park. Each year, the celebration offers attendees locally-featured food trucks, carnival games and a fireworks show that lights up the sky. “The Fourth of July is a big deal here, and everybody enjoys celebrating it at the lake,” says McCall.Tex-Mex is the go-to meal
For groceries and everyday essentials, H-E-B is located just across Culebra Road, but Diana’s Burgers on Zarzamora Street is a highly-rated local joint for burgers and fries. The food and the friendly service keep customers coming back again and again. Just up the street is El Coco Rayado, a small Mexican restaurant that residents use as a go-to for fruit cups on hot summer days. On the other side of the neighborhood, the famous Henry’s Puffy Tacos serves the favorite SATX-style dish made known by owner Henry Lopez and his brother Ray, who owns Ray’s Drive Inn.Jefferson High makes history
Served by the San Antonio Independent School District, students can attend Beacon Hill Academy before enrolling in Thomas Jefferson High School. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and as a 2016 GRAMMY® Signature School, Thomas Jefferson has an overall Niche grade of B-minus, while Beacon has a C.A connected commute
State Route 421 is the southern border of the neighborhood, connecting directly to Interstate 10 which serves as the neighborhood’s eastern border. Residents’ access is expanded even more as I-10 connects to Interstate 35, making the commute around the metro San Antonio and beyond seamless.Architectural pillars
The architecture in San Antonio is heavily admired, and the same goes for Woodlawn Lake. Buildings like the Basilica and the Woodlawn Lake lighthouse have become architectural pillars in the community and locals enjoy admiring them.
