Inner Sunset
The alluring and colorful vibe of local business
"The Irving Street corridor is the heart and soul of the Inner Sunset. And it's got some of the best food in the city," Bellings says. Tourists and locals walk the blocks to visit vibrant coffee shops, cozy bookstores and breezy art galleries. Residents chat on the back patio at Um.ma, a downhome Korean joint with a modern streak that's received high praise from local critics. Others queue in line for a table at trendy San Tung, a beloved local Chinese restaurant with chile-spiced chicken wings that have been hailed as some of the best in the country by several national outlets. Every second Sunday of the month, vintage treasures pop up at the Inner Sunset Flea Market, a grassroots event with dozens of vendors and food stands that closes several blocks of Irving Street to vehicle traffic.Pastel stucco and vintage architecture in Inner Sunset
Until the early 20th century, the Sunset district was home to windswept dunes and beach scrub bordering the deep blue Pacific. However, in the 1920s and 30s, developers pushed into the area, building many of the pastel-colored stucco row homes the neighborhood has become known for. These modest residences with bay windows and 1920s craftsmanship are the most common home type in the area. They usually have large, front-facing windows that flood their interiors with natural light. Some have large backyards, but front yards and patios are hard to come by; front doors typically open directly onto the sidewalk. Plenty of condos and duplexes are in the area, priced between $600,000 and $1 million. Meanwhile, detached homes range from $1.3 million to $2.5 million, depending on their size and amenities. The expansive Golden Gate Park
To the north on Inner Sunset is the monumental Golden Gate Park, a spacious, historic park with interconnected walking paths, glittering lakes and abundant greenery. There, people peruse the rare plant collections of the San Francisco Botanical Garden, pay a visit to the De Young Museum's fine arts collection or relax at the park's Japanese Tea Garden. For a short hike, residents head up to nearby Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve to climb twisting trails through wooded slopes and ravines in the city's center.Next-door events for Inner Sunset residents
Due to its neighbor, Golden Gate Park, Inner Sunset residents have front-row seats to annual events that run year-round. In August, the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival brings in local musicians of all genres alongside food vendors and visual arts for a weekend of cultural diversity. It's one of several music festivals that come to the park.Acclaimed schools of the San Francisco United District
The San Francisco Unified School District serves Inner Sunset, and kids can start at the acclaimed Jefferson Elementary School or Alice Fong Yu Alternative Elementary School, which have an A and A-minus on Niche, respectively. Jefferson Elementary offers a robust arts curriculum, while Alice Fong Yu Alternative is known as the nation's first Chinese immersion public school. Students move on to A.P. Giannini Middle School, ranked with an A-minus, before finishing basic education at the B-plus-graded Independence High.Navigating San Francisco via foot and metro
The Inner Sunset is bordered by Lincoln Way to the north, and Quintara Street to the south, and those who drive cars should be aware that Inner Sunset is a few miles from major roads such as Interstate 280. It's highly walkable, of course, and has several Muni metro stations along Judah Street and Irving Street.
