How Stonegate supports laid-back but connected living

About 5 miles southeast of San Jose's lively downtown, Stonegate is a traditional suburban community defined by its mid-20th-century homes, laid-back atmosphere and friendly neighbors. Parks and trails get people moving outdoors, while local schools make it easy for kids to walk or bike to class. Popular shopping centers are nearby, and the area is well-positioned for commuters with its quick access to Highway 101. While it's not a destination neighborhood, Stonegate offers an environment focused on connection and convenience.

What single-family homes look like and cost in Stonegate

Stonegate is primarily made up of single-family homes from the 1960s through the 1980s. Architectural styles range from single-story ranch-style homes to two-story Spanish Revivals, New Traditionals and even some Tudor-inspired homes. Most properties have three to four bedrooms, mid-sized lots and spacious driveways. "It's a nice, bedroom community where you know your neighbors," says broker associate Chris Alston of Keller Williams Bay Area Estates. "People look out for each other here."

The area is an attractive option for buyers looking for lower home prices than other suburban South San Jose neighborhoods. "It's one of the final affordable places in South San Jose," Alston says. Prices usually range from $1 million to $1.4 million, though some homes have sold for as much as $1.7 million.

The area has easy access to Highway 101 and public transit options

The community has good access to commuter corridors. Highway 101 borders the neighborhood, connecting drivers to Interstate 280, North San Jose job centers and most of Silicon Valley. McLaughlin Avenue also connects to I-280, leading to Downtown San Jose in about 5 miles, or roughly 20 minutes. The neighborhood is mainly car-dependent, but VTA bus routes are available along main roads, and a Caltrain station is about 4 miles away. The Coyote Creek Trail also makes biking an option.

Although Highway 101 supports easy commutes, it can also bring excess noise and traffic congestion to the neighborhood, especially around rush hours. Sound barriers along the highway help reduce noise, but most people accept the inconvenience as a fair trade for quick highway access.

Trails, parks and recreation options are very accessible here

The neighborhood has many options for outdoor recreation. People regularly walk and jog along the Coyote Creek Trail, which stretches from the San Francisco Bay to Anderson Lake County Park in Morgan Hill. "It's a nice trail," says Realtor Nancy Reynolds with Loveseat Homes. "You'll see lots of families biking together there." Los Lagos Golf Course offers an expansive public green to play on, and Windmill Springs Park has a playground and picnic areas. You can practice tricks at Stonegate Skate Park, cheer on Spartan Little League teams at Tully Community Ballfields or plant some veggies at a local community garden.

Dozens more shopping and dining options are just on the other side of Highway 101. The neighborhood is also less than 3 miles from Eastridge Center, a popular shopping mall with an AMC movie theater, a bowling alley and an arcade.
