Los Jardines de la Plaza
Getting around Yuma County from San Luis
Main Street is about a mile east, and leads 2 miles north to Route 95 and about 2 miles south to the U.S./Mexico border. “In the heart of Main Street, you can say there’s traffic, but it’s a really small city so there aren’t hours of traffic,” says Omar Delgadillo, a Yuma County local and a Realtor with Realty One Group Gateway. Yuma County Area Transit buses also stop along Main Street, though most residents drive to get around. Route 95 leads 23 miles northeast to Downtown Yuma and Yuma International Airport. About a mile northeast, San Luis Urgent Care is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., while 22 miles northeast, Yuma Regional Medical Center is open 24 hours a day.Groceries, fast food and local restaurants a mile east
Shopping and dining are found about a mile east, along Main Street. Food City is the closest grocery store, and fast-food chains here include Jack in the Box and McDonald’s. At the locally owned Azul Cafe, folks can grab coffee and Mexican desserts like rosca judia, an iced cinnamon-coffee cake. About two blocks east of Main Street, family-owned Panchita’s has been a local staple for over 30 years, offering no-frills dining and Sonoran-style Mexican cuisine. Next door, locals might stop into La Chucheria for milkshakes and shaved ice.Sports and play at Moctezuma Park
Less than a quarter-mile north of the neighborhood, Moctezuma Park has a playground, a basketball court and sand volleyball; there’s also an RC track where locals race remote-controlled cars. About a mile east, Joe Orduño Park is San Luis’ biggest and most popular park, featuring baseball and softball diamonds, and a soccer field. The park also has an outdoor community pool, and an indoor fitness center where residents can work out and play basketball.Ranch-style homes dotted with desert trees
Los Jardines de la Plaza's residential streets are lined with sidewalks and dotted with the occasional cypress, rosewood or palm tree. Most homes here are ranch-style and date to the late 20th-century, but there are also a handful of late 20th-century Pueblo-inspired houses with smooth, tan, stucco exteriors and porch posts. Some local homes have been renovated, and all have three or four bedrooms, as well as concrete driveways and drought-tolerant landscaping. “Most of these homes don’t have garages, but they might have carports, and their lot sizes are about 6,500 square feet,” Rosales says. Prices range from $200,000 to $250,000, depending on their renovations, which might include additions like a swimming pool or attached garage.Championship soccer at San Luis High
Local kids may start at Rio Colorado Elementary, rated C-minus by Niche, before moving on to the C-rated San Luis Middle. San Luis High is rated a C-minus, and is home to a robust athletics program; for instance, the boys’ soccer team appeared in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 state finals, winning the latter. Students at San Luis High may also take dual-enrollment courses for college credit at Arizona Western College.Community celebrations at Joe Orduño Park
Local events are held throughout the year at Joe Orduño Park. Each April on Dia Del Niño, San Luis celebrates local children with street food from local vendors, live music and dance performances, and activities like eating contests and prize raffles. The annual 4th of July Freedom Celebration is one of San Luis’ largest events, where locals celebrate with patriotic costumes and enjoy carnival rides, live music from local bands and a striking fireworks display over the park.
