Los Portales del Alamo
Getting around Yuma County
Main Street is found about a mile east of the neighborhood. This major thoroughfare leads about a mile south to the U.S./Mexico border, and connects 2 miles north with Route 95, which leads 23 miles northeast to Yuma. “Usually, the only traffic you'll see on Main Street is the afternoon line to go to Mexico,” Delgadillo says. Yuma County Area Transit buses stop along Main Street, as well. San Luis Urgent Care is about a half-mile east along Main Street, and open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m, while the 24-hour Yuma Regional Medical Center is about 21 miles northeast via Route 95. Yuma International Airport is 22 miles away.Dining and shopping around Main Street
Shopping and dining are within 2 miles east of the neighborhood, on or around Main Street. The closest grocery stores are Food City and King Market, both on Main Street. In addition to fast-food restaurants, there are also locally owned spots like Patio Sushi Cafe, popular for Asian-fusion creations like their jalapeño roll with tempura shrimp, cucumber, avocado, cream cheese and scallions topped with tampico and jalapeño. Authentic Mexican cuisine, which San Luis is known for, can be found at spots like the family-owned Panchita's and casual taco restaurant El Chipilón.Sports and shade at Joe Orduño Park
Independence Street Skatepark sits in the center of the neighborhood, next to a popular playing field. About a mile east, Delgadillo says 23-acre Joe Orduño Park is San Luis’ biggest and most popular park, offering various playing fields, a fitness center and paved walking paths; the park's community pool is especially popular in summer, when temperatures here regularly reach upward of 90 degrees.Suburban, single-family homes with desert landscaping
Along the sidewalk-lined residential streets of Los Portales del Alamo, homes are set close together, their dirt-packed lots occasionally dotted with low-water plantings. Most homes are either late 20th-century ranch-style or 21st-century Spanish Revival-style; both styles have three to four bedrooms, and their lots range from 5,000 to 7,000 square feet. Many of the ranch-style homes lack carports or garages, while most Spanish Revival-style homes have attached garages and may include special features like covered patios. Prices for both styles range from $200,000 to $250,000, depending on a home’s size and year of construction. In the neighborhood’s southeast, there are a few late 20th-century manufactured homes with one to two bedrooms, attached carports, and brightly painted exteriors; prices range from $80,000 to $100,000, depending on the number of bedrooms.Robust athletic opportunities at San Luis High
Local kids may start at Arizona Desert Elementary, rated C-minus by Niche, before moving on to San Luis Middle, rated C; both are about a mile east of the neighborhood, next to Joe Orduño Park. Teens can attend the C-minus-rated San Luis High, which offers a robust athletics department including tennis, wrestling and soccer; in 2023-24, the boys’ soccer team won the state championship. During the 2024-25 school year, San Luis High and other Yuma Union District schools began offering competitive diving as a new sport for students.Being a part of the community at local events
About a mile east from Los Portales del Alamo, community events are held throughout the year at Joe Orduño Park. For the 4th of July Freedom Festival, locals bring folding chairs and blankets to enjoy live music and watch the fireworks; there’s also food, carnival rides and prize raffles. “There’s usually a lot of events set up by the city," Delgadillo says. "There’s especially a lot of soccer games and baseball games.” Also at the park, the Cesar Chavez Cultural Center offers community classes in dance, music and art; there are also clinics for sports like pickleball, basketball and volleyball.
