The medical neighborhood of San Marcos

Mockingbird Hills has just as many medical offices as it does apartments. Besides having multiple living options alongside local schools and restaurants, Mockingbird Hills also has the benefit of having San Marcos' medical district southwest of the neighborhood. With a 100-bed hospital and many more doctors' offices and medical practices, Mockingbird Hills is what health care looks like in San Marcos. "There's a variety of specialists in med park," says Michelle Comstock, the office manager for Corridor Primary Care Pediatrics. "There's a CPO laboratory, there's a gynecologist – there's medical offices all around us."

The crown jewel of the medical district is the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital, which serves over 30,000 patients annually through its 24-hour emergency room. It also has an intensive care unit and a state-of-the-art cardiac monitoring system. Medical Parkway has even more clinics that focus on orthopedics, dermatology and pain management. Alligator Dental ensures children's teeth are sparkling clean, while Corridor Primary Care Pediatrics handles newborn care and well-child visits.

Pizza, burgers and bowling

Most shopping and dining establishments sit on the western end outside of the medical district. Wienerschnitzel delivers fresh hot dogs and sandwiches across the street from Lowe's, while Taquitos La Chula offers authentic birria beef tacos. Rosie's Pizza To Go serves hoagie sandwiches and chicken wings alongside freshly baked pies, and Sunset Bowling has burgers and fries in addition to 24 bowling lanes. "Everything is relatively within walking distance," Comstock says. "It's growing, but we still try to maintain that small-town atmosphere as best as we can."

Transportation from downtown to Redwood

Besides EMS transport, the city's paratransit services provide complimentary rides for disabled or senior residents 65 or older. The San Marcos Transit also provides public transportation from the neighborhood to Downtown San Marcos 2 miles north and Redwood 5 miles southeast. The neighborhood is equally walkable and bikeable, taking 30 minutes to cover the entire area on foot. "The hospital has a big walking trail with some green space where people go to walk their dogs," Comstock says. "We like to call it 'the dog park.'"

Apartment homes and senior living facilities

Most apartments are clustered around the northern end away from the medical district. Parkway Grande Apartment Homes offers spacious apartments ranging from $999 to $1,514 a month, while pet-friendly rooms at Park Hill Apartment Homes cost between $1,070 and $1,699 a month.
