San Pablo is a suburb on the outskirts of Las Cruces
Set about 6 miles from Downtown Las Cruces and about 3 miles from the colorful Old Mesilla village, San Pablo sits in a small pocket on the southern outskirts of the city. “It’s a small, older agricultural community filled with Adobe homes,” says Raul Tellez, Realtor with Select Realty. “Timber is grown nearby at the Dixie Ranch Tree Farm off of State Road 28, to give an idea of how open and spacious the surrounding areas are." Despite the somewhat rural location of the neighborhood, folks here enjoy proximity to the Avenida de Mesilla commercial corridor - known locally as Las Cruces' "second downtown area"- and Old Mesilla. The Rio Grande runs to the far west of San Pablo, giving residents access to riverside trails like the La Llorona Multi-Use Path and the Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park. State Road 28 is the main access point, giving residents a simple, straight-shot route to Downtown El Paso in about 42 miles.
Southwest-style homes surrounded by the Organ Mountains
The roads in San Pablo wind gently, leading to homes that share a cohesive, desert aesthetic. Common of Southwest yards, low-maintenance landscaping with gravel and cacti sit in front of most homes instead of grass. Minimalist stucco exteriors in shades of beige, light brown, and tan stucco blend with the surrounding arid landscape and Organ Mountains. Architectural styles range from Southwest Mediterranean, Spanish-style and to modern Adobe homes here were built in the 2010s, many with flat or red tile roofs. Common of Southwest yards, grass here is scarce; low-maintenance desert landscaping with gravel and cacti sit in front of most homes instead. Homes here were typically built between the early 2000s and late 2010s. A 2,500-square-foot home with three-bedrooms would generally cost between $450,000 and $500,000, while a 3,500-square-foot home with four-bedrooms would cost between $650,000 and $750,000. Homebuyers in San Pablo are expected to pay monthly homeowners association fees, starting as low as $25 and capping at around $150.
Early College High preps students for the future
Local public-school students can start out at Tombaugh Elementary, which earns a B-plus from Niche, then continue to Zia Middle, which earns a B-minus. Arrowhead Park Early College High earns an A-plus, giving students the opportunity to earn college credits from Dona Ana County Community College that count toward Associate Degrees of Science Engineering, Pre-Computer and Pre-Health.
Trails along the Rio Grande
La Llorona Multi-Use Path Trailhead is 4 miles west of San Pablo on the eastern edge of the Rio Grande, spanning nearly 5 miles. Folks can bike or hike along the train, connecting with the Outfall Channel Trail and the Triviz Multi-Use Path. Venturing out even further west will bring folks to the Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park, set about 8 miles away from the neighborhood. As a designated Important Birding Area, the park offers 2 miles of hiking trails and self-guided tours. Mesilla Park, set about 3 miles away on the same land as the Frank O'Brien Papen Community Center. The park features a playground, a few picnic benches, and a wide multi-use field.
Avenida de Mesilla lined with shopping and dining
Driving about 2 miles north on State Road 28 brings residents to Avenida de Mesilla, a commercial and residential road lined with independently owned businesses. Family owned and operated Spotted Dog Brewery is the first stop, offering a long tap list and outdoor dining over views of the Organ Mountains. Continuing down the road leads to restaurants like Chala's Wood Fire Grill and La Posta De Mesilla; both serving up authentic Mexican food. Folks head to Palacio Bar for music and happy, a bar that hasn't changed since it opened in 1936. For groceries, there's an Albertsons on El Paseo Road and Walmart Supercenter on South Valley Road - both within the Avenida de Mesilla corridor. On the other side of the road, Indigo Mermaid of Mesilla sells specialty items like sage, while Buffalo Swag Salon, Spa & Boutique offers custom manicures, jewelry and clothes.
The historic Old Mesilla village is located just off Avenida de Mesilla's western end, home to the National Historic Landmark Mesilla Plaza. The small border town dates back over 150 years. Today, folks can walk around the village to shop at boutiques, eat or browse through art galleries.
State Road 28 connects to Texas
New Mexico State Road 28 borders the neighborhood to the west, merging with Interstate 10 and leading east to El Paso, Texas in about 42 miles and Ciudad Juarez in about 56 miles. Heading about 5 miles north on State Road 28 leads to Las Cruces’ Downtown Main Street. The closest hospital is MountainView Regional Medical Center, set about 8 miles away. Residents will have to take Interstate 10 for about 49 miles to get to the nearest commercial airport, El Paso International.
