Breathtaking bay, mountain, and valley views
Tucked away between the city of San Rafael and Terra Linda, Los Ranchitos showcases gorgeous homes woven into the rural terrain of Marin County with breathtaking bay, mountain and valley views. Its prime location puts it only minutes from premier hiking trails, neighborhood amenities and shops and restaurants in downtown San Rafael. Andrew Falk, a realtor at Caldwell Banker Realty who specializes in the area, said the Los Ranchitos subdivision is “one of the most exclusive in San Rafael.” With large houses on big lots, he says many residents of the neighborhood own horses, while some who live in the hillier sections have small vineyards on their property. “There’s a lot of room to roam. It’s definitely a sought-after location," Falk says.

Vintage styles on spacious lots
The neighborhood’s namesake subdivision, Los Ranchitos, features more than 150 homes on one- and two-acre lots built in the 1940s along narrow, country roads within the steep, wooded terrain. Many of these homes got their start as country homes for people living in San Francisco in the mid-20th century. There's a variety of architectural styles here, from lavish ranch-style homes to stunning mid-century moderns. It’s also known for the Bridge House, a beautiful, hilltop home designed in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright with imported zebra wood finishes, massive windows, spacious balconies and a living room with a glass floor where you can view a stream and pond below. At the foot of the hills is the Redwood Village subdivision, which offers spacious contemporary homes and townhomes with views of nearby mountain pastures and forests. Next door is San Rafael Meadows, a mid-century suburb with bungalow and ranch-style homes built along curved, suburban streets. Homes prices in the area typically range from $700,000 for smaller, older homes to upwards of $3 million for larger contemporary homes and homes that have been beautifully restored.

Mountain Park offers views of far-off San Francisco
In Los Ranchitos, neighborhood parks and timbered hiking trails are close to home. Locals love their proximity to Los Ranchitos Park, a community space with a tree-lined terrace, playground and a walking loop at the heart of the neighborhood. For hiking, it's about a mile south to Mountain Park, which offers a 2-mile trail to an overlook with views of far-off San Francisco. China Camp State Park, a mountainous, 75-acre preserve on what was once the site of a Chinese American fishing village, is about 4 miles away.
San Rafael's lively downtown features dozens of shops
San Rafael, an historic city of 62,000 residents, is less than 3 miles from the neighborhood. In the city’s lively downtown area, locals can peruse the Victorian-style buildings, dozens of shops and walkable streets with string lights crisscrossing the main boulevard. For an espresso, wake up at Greffeo Coffee, a family-run, Italian coffee house with deep roots in the Bay Area. Or check out California Gold in the evening, a local cocktail lounge whose look is inspired by English and Irish pubs and pre-Gold Rush California. For upscale dining, residents can reserve a table at Il Davide, a Marin County institution since 1995 that serves up award-winning Italian dishes. For a sweet treat, head over to Johnny Doughnuts, a beloved pastry and coffee shop. For groceries, there's a Safeway about 2 miles north of the neighborhood. It's also just minutes from the Marin Farmer's Market, where dozens of vendors set up every Sunday morning with fresh produce, food trucks and other artisan goods.

Close - but not too close
To get to San Francisco and the Bay Area, residents can drive less than a mile to U.S. Route 101, also known as Redwood Highway. From there it’s about 20 miles to the Golden Gate Bridge. “What’s really great about this location is the commute. You’re close to the highway but not too close, and there’s very little traffic,” Falk says.
