Skyline Ranch
Mediterranean-style new traditional homes
Skyline Ranch’s 21st-century Mediterranean-style new traditional homes sit close together along sidewalk-lined streets and have yards with low-water plants like cacti and native shrubs. Homes can have one or two stories, and their earth-toned stucco exteriors match the surrounding desert landscape and the nearby San Tan Mountains. “You get views of mountains in Scottsdale, but you’re paying a million dollars,” Whalen says. “Here, you can buy at the base of the mountains, and it’s beautiful and affordable.”Homes have between two and six bedrooms, and layouts range from 1,200 and 4,100 square feet; many have special features like backyard pools, casitas and chef’s kitchens. Prices range from $325,000 to $850,000, depending on a home's size and special features. Luxury custom homes in the gated Encanto Real subdivision sit on 1-acre lots, with horse privileges; these homes cost between $950,000 and $1.1 million.
STEM Academy at Poston Butte High
Local kids can start school at Skyline Ranch Elementary, which serves pre-kindergarten through Grade 8 and earns a B-minus from Niche. The American Leadership Academy’s San Tan Valley campus is another option for pre-kindergarten through Grade 6; this public charter school earns an A-minus. At the B-rated Poston Butte High, students can join the STEM Academy and study computer science, engineering and biotechnology. The new state Route 24
The city of Queen Creek is about 4 miles north, and often congested with traffic. Opened in 2022, a new section of Route 24 about 10 miles north lets residents bypass this traffic enroute to Loop 202, which leads about 40 miles northwest to Downtown Phoenix. With no public transportation and limited bike lanes, most locals rely on their cars to get around, though sidewalks make the area pedestrian friendly. Banner Ironwood Medical Center is roughly 2 miles away. Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, which has domestic commercial flights, is around 12 miles east, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is a 36-mile trip.Live music and steaks at San Tan Flat
San Tan Flat in the neighborhood’s west is a local legend for its live country music, steaks and western saloon vibe. “San Tan Flat has been there for years. If you mention it to anybody in the Phoenix area, they know what it is,” Whalen says. “They have a bunch of picnic tables outside, misters for hot days, outdoor bands and good food. There are families; there are guys on motorcycles — everybody’s welcome.” Queen Creek Olive Mill to the north offers more outdoor dining, but instead of being surrounded by cowboy memorabilia, diners can enjoy bruschetta and Italian dishes in an olive grove. “The Olive Mill is exactly what it sounds like,” Whalen says. “It was an old olive mill, but they serve great food, and you can buy olive oil when you’re there.”Local and national chain restaurants are also nearby, including Native Grill & Wings sports bar and Starbucks. The Home Depot and Walmart are in the southeast, and nearby grocery stores include Fry’s and Sprouts Farmers Market. Queen Creek Marketplace, roughly 4 miles north, is the area’s main shopping hub, with national retailers like T.J. Maxx, Target and Trader Joe’s.
Mountain biking at San Tan Mountain Regional Park
At the 10,000-acre San Tan Mountain Regional Park to the southwest, locals can explore over 20 miles of trails through the Sonoran Desert that are popular for mountain biking, horseback riding and hiking. There are several pocket parks throughout the neighborhood that offer playgrounds and green space, including the 3-acre Skyline Park. Golfers can play 18 holes at nearby public and private golf courses, including San Tan Highlands, Encanterra Country Club and Las Colinas Golf Club. Pecan Lake Entertainment, an amusement center about 2 miles north, has family-friendly activities like go-karts, escape rooms and an arcade.Rodeos at Horseshoe Park & Equestrian Centre
The Horseshoe Park & Equestrian Centre holds regular events, including the Roots N’ Boots Queen Creek Rodeo each March. Attendees can watch competitions in bull riding, cowboy mounted shooting and breakaway roping; there are also carnival rides, live music and an antique tractor show. There are other events here throughout the year, like barrel racing competitions, horse shows and Monster Truck Wars.Scorpions near recent construction
The new construction in Skyline Ranch can make scorpions an issue for some residents. “It’s not like in the movies where they’re hanging on the walls, but people do catch more scorpions in areas where there’s new development around,” Whalen says. “The trick is to kill the crickets because that’s the scorpion’s food. You have to make sure, at least in the summer when crickets are really active, that you have monthly service from an exterminator. If you kill the crickets, you kill the scorpions.”Homes here are close to undeveloped land in San Tan Mountain Regional Park, which puts them at a higher risk for wildfire. However, residents are more likely to see smoke from wildfires than to experience any direct effects. The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management has an app that can alert residents about nearby wildfires.
