Mount Vernon Woods, a wooded getaway near downtown Sandy Springs
While trees are common in Sandy Springs’ neighborhoods, the maturity of those in Mount Vernon Woods provides a sense of nature just a mile from downtown Sandy Springs. “In other parts around Atlanta, you’ve had so much development where they tear down trees and plant new ones. It’s not the same,” says former resident Jamey Jones, a Realtor with Atlanta Fine Homes and Sotheby’s International Realty. It was love at first sight for resident Matt LaMarsh, a Realtor with Engel & Völkers Atlanta, who first visited the neighborhood with his fiancé for an appointment with their wedding invitation calligrapher. “We were early, so we drove through the neighborhood and fell in love immediately. It feels like you’re in the middle of the north Georgia mountains.” While driving through what LaMarsh describes as private, quiet streets that are walkable to restaurants and city attractions, he says, “I remember telling my soon-to-be wife that we’re going to buy a house in that neighborhood.”
Families appreciate the ample space, mature trees, easy walkability of Mount Vernon Woods’ residential streets.

Mount Vernon Woods’ varied home styles have a wide appeal
Mount Vernon Woods is full of 1960s ranch styles, contemporary and transitional dwellings. Many of the neighborhood’s original homes have been remodeled or replaced with more modern designs. “This is not a cookie-cutter neighborhood,” LaMarsh says, noting the diverse architecture includes a live-edge log cabin. On average, homes sell for $1.2 million and stay on the market for 16 days. Older homes range from $600,000 to $800,000 and have up to 2,300 square feet. “They are super affordable for that part of town and being outside of the I-285 perimeter and so close to everything that is Atlanta,” says area Realtor Stacy Booth, an agent with Engel & Völkers Atlanta. Dwellings with updates or add-ons range from $800,000 to $1.5 million. Newer construction residences feature up to 10,000 square feet and range in price from $1.5 million to $2.3 million. The eclectic mixture of housing makes the neighborhood “super appealing to young professionals and families who want a great location with a decent-size home and folks who are retiring and building their dream homes,” LaMarsh says. Mount Vernon Woods’ CAP Index Crime Score is 5 out of 10, slightly above the national average of 4.
