River Chase is a tucked-away neighborhood on the Chattahoochee
River Chase is a quiet Sandy Springs neighborhood along the Chattahoochee River with large homes and great views. “The style in the 60s and 70s and even 80s was, put the houses away from the central business district, make it less busy,” says Ariel Baverman, a longtime Sandy Springs resident and Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. “These neighborhoods are more tucked away, so you don’t have commercial traffic driving past your house,” she says about River Chase and the surrounding area.
Landscaping offers privacy for River Chase's large homes
There are 160 homes in River Chase, with a median year of construction of 1977. Many homes are more than 5,000 square feet. Many homes are tucked behind luscious trees and high hedges, enjoying plenty of privacy from the road and sidewalks. Some homes have private swimming pools. No single style of architecture dominates River Chase, and buyers can find traditional homes and houses with Tudor influences. “There is a mixture of housing styles,” says Ronda Smith, president of the Sandy Springs Council of Neighborhoods. “Some of them are on the river and enjoy beautiful views from their backyards.” With so few houses, there is not a lot of turnover in River Chase. Houses that do hit the market often list between $900,000 and $2.6 million, and new construction recently listed for $3.4 million.
A-rated public schools with an IB program
Children in the area are zoned for Heards Ferry Elementary School, which has an A on Niche. They then head to Ridgeview Charter Middle School, which has an A-minus. The high school, Riverwood International Charter School, also has an A. The three schools offer International Baccalaureate Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programs. “It’s an amazing school district,” Smith says.
Community tennis courts and a quick drive to Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area
River Chase has a clubhouse with a pool and tennis courts for residents. The neighborhood is also close to the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and its many hiking and mountain biking trails. The area also has boat launches and picnic areas. The City Springs entertainment district is only 3 miles – or a 10-minute drive – from River Chase. The area includes the 4-acre City Green park, which hosts a weekly farmers market and free summer concerts.
Nearby seafood and a drive to East Cobb for the mall
Shopping and dining options are a short drive away. A small shopping area just south of Interstate 285 is anchored by a Publix grocery store. Baverman says River Chase residents can also easily head to East Cobb, about 8 miles away, and enjoy everything that the Avenue East Cobb mall has to offer, including shopping venues, restaurants, yoga studios and other services. Nearby popular eateries include Porter Brewery Pizza and Ray’s on the River, an upscale seafood restaurant.
Transportation, crime and minimal flooding in River Chase
Interstate 285 is right next to the River Chase neighborhood, providing easy access into Atlanta, about 15 miles south. Heards Ferry Road and Mt. Vernon Highway take residents to downtown Sandy Springs. The CAP Index crime score is 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4. Though the neighborhood borders the river, locals say flooding is not usually a problem because most houses sit at a higher elevation.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data.
