Santa Fe suburbs surrounded by natural spaces and museums
Set 2 miles south of Downtown Santa Fe, and home to the Museum Hill District, the suburban Southeast corridor is centered on the Arroyo de Los Chamisos and Old Santa Fe Trail, blending the City Different’s natural spaces and vibrant culture. “Heading into the area on the Old Santa Fe Trail, the views you get of the Sun and Moon mountains and the Pueblo buildings are not much different than what waggoners would have seen when arriving to Santa Fe way back in the day,” says Daniel Huberman, a local Realtor with Santa Fe Realty who grew up in the area. “The value of being surrounded by so much nature and the old trail is really what brings people here.” Area subdivisions like DeVargas Heights and Sun Mountain Estates were established in the late 1970s and have since remained popular among families with young children for their access to the highly rated Wood-Gormley school district. Despite housing the popular gardens and cultural centers of Museum Hill, mostly residential Southeast maintains a quiet, laid-back feel, with tree-lined streets and a CAP Crime Index score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4. Area houses of worship include the Mount Carmel Chapel and the First Baptist Church.

Santa Fe estates and townhouses along the Arroyo de Los Chamisos
West of the Arroyo de Los Chamisos, in the DeVargas Heights subdivision, Santa Fe-style homes from the late 1970s and early ‘80s sit on a half-acre to 1 acre of manicured desert landscaping; common features include flat roofs, tan stucco exteriors and attached garages, a rarity in the greater Eastside area. Prices for these three-to-five-bedroom homes range from $650,000 to $895,000. DeVargas Heights also has detached Santa Fe-style townhouses called casitas; most have two-bedroom layouts and range from $360,000 to $440,000, depending on their square footage.
East of the arroyo, custom-built Santa Fe-style estates sit in subdivisions along the base of Sun Mountain. Built anywhere between the 1920s and 2020s, these homes often feature the brick parapets of the Territorial style and the exposed wooden beams of the Pueblo style. Most sit on 1-acre lots with garden spaces and cobblestone patios, and range from $1 million to $1.4 million, with one-story properties costing more. Homes set on 2 acres or more can range from $2.1 million to $3 million, based on lot size.

Public garden spaces, sprawling arroyos and mountain trails
Southeast is surrounded by natural spaces and gardens. Set on Museum Hill, the Santa Fe Botanical Garden spans over 20 acres, filled with thousands of native plants; its nearly 1-mile trail takes visitors through a cherry orchard, the labyrinthian Ojos y Manos Garden and a stretch of juniper-pinyon woodlands. The Arroyos de Los Chamisos runs alongside the Botanical Garden and through the middle of the community, later intersecting with the paved, nearly 11-mile Arroyo de Los Chamisos Urban Trail. “It’s a beast of an arroyo,” explains Huberman. “It’s got all these chunky chamisa bushes and a bunch of other plants along the riverbed that make it special.”
Hiking routes like the 2-mile Sun Mountain Trail and 6-mile Atalaya Mountain Trail begin in the Southeast corridor, taking adventurers over hills studded with rocky outcroppings and ponderosa pines. The Santa Fe Tennis and Swim Club also sits in the center of the community; club members have access to its eight tennis and pickleball courts, heated swimming pool and specialty cafe and wine bar.
