Santa Fe estates and townhouses along the Arroyo de Los Chamisos
West of the Arroyo de Los Chamisos, in the DeVargas Heights subdivision, Santa Fe-style homes from the late 1970s and early ‘80s sit on a half-acre to 1 acre of manicured desert landscaping; common features include flat roofs, tan stucco exteriors and attached garages, a rarity in the greater Eastside area. Prices for these three-to-five-bedroom homes range from $650,000 to $895,000. DeVargas Heights also has detached Santa Fe-style townhouses called casitas; most have two-bedroom layouts and range from $360,000 to $440,000, depending on their square footage.East of the arroyo, custom-built Santa Fe-style estates sit in subdivisions along the base of Sun Mountain. Built anywhere between the 1920s and 2020s, these homes often feature the brick parapets of the Territorial style and the exposed wooden beams of the Pueblo style. Most sit on 1-acre lots with garden spaces and cobblestone patios, and range from $1 million to $1.4 million, with one-story properties costing more. Homes set on 2 acres or more can range from $2.1 million to $3 million, based on lot size.
Public garden spaces, sprawling arroyos and mountain trails
Southeast is surrounded by natural spaces and gardens. Set on Museum Hill, the Santa Fe Botanical Garden spans over 20 acres, filled with thousands of native plants; its nearly 1-mile trail takes visitors through a cherry orchard, the labyrinthian Ojos y Manos Garden and a stretch of juniper-pinyon woodlands. The Arroyos de Los Chamisos runs alongside the Botanical Garden and through the middle of the community, later intersecting with the paved, nearly 11-mile Arroyo de Los Chamisos Urban Trail. “It’s a beast of an arroyo,” explains Huberman. “It’s got all these chunky chamisa bushes and a bunch of other plants along the riverbed that make it special.”Hiking routes like the 2-mile Sun Mountain Trail and 6-mile Atalaya Mountain Trail begin in the Southeast corridor, taking adventurers over hills studded with rocky outcroppings and ponderosa pines. The Santa Fe Tennis and Swim Club also sits in the center of the community; club members have access to its eight tennis and pickleball courts, heated swimming pool and specialty cafe and wine bar.
Highly rated Santa Fe Public Schools
Most local kids attend Wood-Gormley Elementary, which earns an A-minus from Niche, but those in the neighborhood’s northeastern corner attend Atalaya Elementary, which scores a B-plus; both schools feed into the C-minus-rated Milagro Middle. At A-minus-rated Santa Fe High, students can join engineering and JROTC programs.Southeast is home to the Santa Fe campus of Saint John’s College’s Santa Fe, a private liberal arts college tucked away in the Sangre de Cristo foothills. The school employs the Great Books program, a curriculum centered around famous books from the Western Canon that cover a wide array of disciplines.
Cultural centers and events on Museum Hill
Secluded from area suburbs behind juniper-pinyon woodlands, Museum Hill is also home to four museums that document the histories and cultures of Northern New Mexico. These institutions include the Museum of International Folk Art, known for its collection of over 150,000 artifacts from around the globe, and the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, which showcases Native American artwork, houses artifacts and hosts film screenings.Near the Old Las Vegas Highway and Interstate 25
Interstate 25 and the Old Las Vegas Highway are less than a mile south of the community, running parallel to each other. The Old Santa Fe and Old Pecos trails are the neighborhood's main thoroughfares; both are lined with bike lanes and lead to Downtown Santa Fe, 2 miles north. Santa Fe Trails bus stops are found by the Museum Hill area, along Camino Lejo and Camino de Cruz Blanca. The CHRISTUS Saint Vincent Regional Medical Center sits 1 mile west, and the Santa Fe Regional Airport is 14 miles west.Shopping and dining in Downtown Santa Fe
The only business in Southeast is the Museum Hill Cafe, so residents generally head 2 miles north to Downtown Santa Fe for shopping and dining. There, the Santa Fe Plaza is surrounded by famous cantinas like the Shed, as well as independent book and coffee shops like Collected Works, and fine dining establishments like La Plazuela at La Fonda Hotel. The DeVargas Center downtown includes chain grocery stores like Market Street and Sprouts Farmers Market, while Kaune’s Neighborhood Market, less than 2 miles north of Southeast on the Old Santa Fe Trail, has been the local go-to for groceries since 1896.
