Juilliard Park
SOFA's galleries, Railroad Square's antique shops and the Santa Rosa Plaza
“There’s such an eclectic, diverse mix of businesses here,” Nordby says. “It’s not just shops and restaurants, but also barbers and galleries and more.” In the block-long SOFA, the Cafe Frida Gallery’s colorful outdoor patio and gallery space is often filled with locals enjoying Mexican and French food, plus the sounds of live music. Also here, the Spinster Sisters restaurant creates a relaxed-yet-upscale feel with its candle-lit tables, redwood-shaded outdoor seating and farm-to-table meals. The Santa Rosa Plaza shopping mall also sits directly in the neighborhood’s center; anchored by a Macy’s and Sonoma County’s only Apple Store, the mall houses over 100 retailers and a food court. The only thing Juilliard Park lacks is grocery stores, but Target and Whole Foods can be found around a mile north.
WinterBlast parade and Museum of Sonoma County
On the first Friday of every month, SOFA’s artists and galleries open their doors to invite visitors to appreciate their art. As the wind gets chillier and sun sets earlier in November, SOFA’s creative spirits also put on the WinterBlast event; stilt performers dressed in bright lights and drapey white clothes parade among decorated, bedazzled sofas up and down South A Street in anticipation of the Holidays. The Sonoma County Museum is also in the neighborhood, with exhibits and a sculpture garden that honor Santa Rosa's agricultural history and multi-cultural community. Special exhibits throughout the year include late-autumn displays of Dia de los Muertos sculptures and altars by local Latino artists.
Craftsman bungalows and converted Queen Annes
Set along narrow streets with tree-shaded sidewalks, most of Juilliard Park’s homes are Craftsman bungalows from the 1900s through 1920s. These two-bedroom, cottage-like properties sit on small, manicured lawns with natural landscaping and white picket fences; common features include raised full-width porches, bay windows and bright wood molding. Prices typically range from $550,000 to $750,000, depending on a home's upgrades and how recently they were made.Less common are larger, Victorian-era homes, usually Queen Anne-style with wrap-around porches and turrets, or Stick-style with decorative trusses and towers. Most of these properties have been converted into multi-family housing with two to three units, and though they rarely come on the market, their prices tend to range between $725,000 and $1 million, depending on their state of repair and architectural uniqueness. “Housing inventory here is often scarce and in high demand," says Danny M. Cronin, a local Realtor with W Real Estate, "as home prices here are some of the lowest in Santa Rosa."
Homes in the northern stretches of Juilliard Park sit in the Saint Rose Historic District. This area is named for the Saint Rose Catholic Church; built in 1900, the church’s weathered grey stones, stained-glass windows and pointed archways make it the only Gothic Revival church in the city. District homeowners who wish to rehabilitate their homes must first have their application approved by the city’s Cultural Heritage Board.
Historic Juilliard Park and nearby gardens and trails
Once the home and orchard of 19th-century winemaker Charles Juilliard, the 9-acre Juilliard Park is one of the city’s oldest. Designed in the 1930s, the park’s lawn spaces are studded with willows, oak trees and a cluster of towering redwoods. Paved pathways wind throughout, and a lazy creek filled with lily pads cuts through Juilliard Park’s center, its stone bridge being a favorite spot for locals to stage wedding and quinceañera photos. Public art pieces include splashy mosaics and modernist statues of geometric shapes, and the community garden’s flowers blossom beside the local league’s bocce ball courts. On summer Sunday evenings, locals can also enjoy free concerts amid the lawns as part of the Juilliard Summer Concert Series.Neighboring the park to the east, the Luther Burbank Home and Gardens honor the famed Sonoma County horticulturalist Luther Burbank, who lived here in the early 1900s and developed hundreds of new plant varieties. Today, the site's manicured gardens always have something in bloom, from the crimson berries of heavenly bamboo to the peachy petals of canna lilies. From the gardens, locals can take to the half-mile Prince Memorial Greenway, which runs along the tree-shaded Santa Rosa Creek.
Immediate Highway 12 and Route 101 access
Juilliard Park is just east of the Highway 12-Route 101 junction; the 12 leads 43 miles east to Napa, and the 101 runs 56 miles south to San Francisco. The Santa Rosa Downtown SMART Rail station is also less than a mile west, and its trains travel to the Larkspur Ferry, which crosses the San Francisco Bay into San Francisco. Around 3 miles east, Providence Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital is Santa Rosa's largest medical center. The regional Sonoma County Airport (STS) is about 9 miles north, and the much larger San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is 68 miles south.Santa Rosa City Schools
Julliard Park’s students are served by the Santa Rosa Elementary School District, which earns a B-minus from Niche, and the Santa Rosa High School District, which earns a B-plus. Kids can start school at the C-plus-rated Luther Burbank Elementary and continue to the B-rated Santa Rosa Middle. Santa Rosa High scores an A-minus and offers an arts-focused magnet program called ArtQuest; the school has also appeared in several popular films, including Francis Ford Coppola’s “Peggy Sue Got Married.”
