Countryside living near downtown Sarasota in Desoto Acres
Tucked away by native landscaping and canopy roads, Desoto Acres offers countryside properties while still being close to Sarasota’s best amenities. It was the first subdivision established outside of Sarasota city limits in 1921. “It’s a great neighborhood for people who want more privacy or have horses,” says Margot Vigar, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty who vlogs about Sarasota neighborhoods on her YouTube channel. “It just feels more rural.” Horses aren't the only animals in the neighborhood; many wildlife species, including sandhill cranes and armadillos, dwell in Desoto Acres. When residents want a taste of the city, downtown is less than 5 miles away.
DeSoto Acres has long been a popular spot for equestrian owners with stables and large amounts of open land.
Private gardens are abundant in DeSoto Acres on large private lots.

Backyard amenities and parks a few miles away
Desoto Acres has always been an equestrian-friendly community. Because of the higher acreage here, families may choose to have their own playgrounds and pools rather than travel to a park. If they are looking for a larger green space, there are many parks within a few miles. Conservatory Park has 55 acres to explore, with an observation deck facing a 10-acre lake. The neighborhood is around 12 miles or less from Lido Beach and Siesta Beach.

Shopping and Dining on University Parkway and in the Rosemary District
Desoto Acres’s central location means convenient access to various shopping and dining. Mi Pueblo has three locations in Sarasota and Venice, and Demetrios Pizza and Grill is a family-owned establishment. Joyland is a nightclub with live music on the weekends, and there are several shopping centers and malls along University Parkway. "The options are endless because you're right by University Parkway,” Vigar says. “That has everything, but they do tend to be more chains. A lot of people in Sarasota like to support small businesses, which is mostly downtown or in the Rosemary District.” Indian Beach-Sapphire Shores is a nearby arts district with museums and theaters.
