Tucked away by native landscaping and canopy roads, Desoto Acres offers countryside properties while still being close to Sarasota’s best amenities. It was the first subdivision established outside of Sarasota city limits in 1921. “It’s a great neighborhood for people who want more privacy or have horses,” says Margot Vigar, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty who vlogs about Sarasota neighborhoods on her YouTube channel. “It just feels more rural.” Horses aren't the only animals in the neighborhood; many wildlife species, including sandhill cranes and armadillos, dwell in Desoto Acres. When residents want a taste of the city, downtown is less than 5 miles away.
DeSoto Acres has long been a popular spot for equestrian owners with stables and large amounts of open land.

Homes on two acre lots with no HOA
Properties in Desoto Acres vary from ranch-styles in need of some renovations to custom-built luxury houses. "Almost every single home in the area is on at least two acres of land,” Vigar says. Most homes are shaded by foliage, and many of the backyards here have inground pools. The neighborhood is laid out in a grid, with Desoto Road being the main thoroughfare. The streets tend to be narrower and lack sidewalks. Single-family homes start at $675,000 and go up to $1.5 million. Desoto Acres has no HOA but does have a volunteer association.
The benefit of having large properties in DeSoto Acres is some have water retention ponds which keep flooding potential down plus look nice.

Sarasota County Schools and close by higher education
Emma E. Booker Elementary earns a B-minus on Niche, while Booker Middle has a B grade. Booker High is an A-minus-rated school with three magnet programs, including the Visual & Performing program. Families also have private and charter school options, as well as controlled open enrollment through Sarasota County Schools’s lottery system. "School choice is incredible in Sarasota,” Vigar says. The neighborhood is close to Ringling College of Art and Design, New College of Florida and the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee Campus.
Booker High School is an A-rated school.

Backyard amenities and parks a few miles away
Desoto Acres has always been an equestrian-friendly community. Because of the higher acreage here, families may choose to have their own playgrounds and pools rather than travel to a park. If they are looking for a larger green space, there are many parks within a few miles. Conservatory Park has 55 acres to explore, with an observation deck facing a 10-acre lake. The neighborhood is around 12 miles or less from Lido Beach and Siesta Beach.

Shopping and Dining on University Parkway and in the Rosemary District
Desoto Acres’s central location means convenient access to various shopping and dining. Mi Pueblo has three locations in Sarasota and Venice, and Demetrios Pizza and Grill is a family-owned establishment. Joyland is a nightclub with live music on the weekends, and there are several shopping centers and malls along University Parkway. "The options are endless because you're right by University Parkway,” Vigar says. “That has everything, but they do tend to be more chains. A lot of people in Sarasota like to support small businesses, which is mostly downtown or in the Rosemary District.” Indian Beach-Sapphire Shores is a nearby arts district with museums and theaters.

Driving the Tamiami Trail and living by the airport
University Parkway is a six-lane commercial corridor to the north that connects to U.S Route 41, also called the Tamiami Trail, and Interstate 75. The neighborhood is car-dependent, without public transportation or bike lanes. Sarasota Bradenton International Airport is about 3 miles away. There has been an effort to reduce noise impact, but homebuyers should visit prospective homes multiple times at various points of the day. Hurricanes and tropical storms can affect the area and may cause evacuations.
Sarasota Bradenton International Airport is less than a mile from DeSoto Acres.
Public transportation is available throughout the greater Sarasota area.
