Homeowners proud of Lake Sarasota
Lake Sarasota is about 10 miles from Downtown Sarasota, far enough away that residents have a quiet respite from the busyness of the city but close enough where they can enjoy all the city’s amenities. This residential neighborhood stands out in another crucial way. “It’s one of the few neighborhoods where there isn’t a required HOA,” says Realtor Julia Montei with Coldwell Banker R.R.E. However, the lack of a homeowners association has little impact on the community’s upkeep and engagement. Most houses sit on well-maintained lawns. “The homeowners are pretty proud of their properties,” Montei says. Residents have access to highly rated schools and green space, as well. Lake Sarasota has a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.

Competitive market with variety of homes
Spanish moss hangs from the live oaks that decorate the manicured lawns of Lake Sarasota. Sidewalks line the curved streets, making it easy for locals to reach Lakeview Park. Ranch-style homes are the most common, although there are plenty of new traditional homes, several boasting contemporary and Spanish influences. “It’s a good-sized community, with a variety of homes,” Montei says. Most residences were built between the 1980s and early 2020s, although some date back to the 1950s. Prices for a single-family house typically range from $325,000 to $525,000, although southern or waterfront properties can cost $625,000 to $1.1 million. The market moves very fast in the neighborhood – a fact Montei knows firsthand because she is looking for a home in the area. The Federal Emergency Management Agency says that Lake Sarasota has a very high risk of hurricanes and a relatively low risk of flooding.

Lots to do at Lakeview Park
Lakeview Park surrounds Lake Sarasota, which shares a name with the neighborhood. In the 1950s, swan boat tours and ski shows were regularly held on the water. Today, people can often be seen kayaking, canoeing and fishing throughout the year. There is also plenty to do on land. Friends can play a round of disc golf or pétanque, and kids can run around the playground. Animal lovers can take their dogs for a walk along one of the small trails at the park before letting them run loose at Lakeview Paw Park. Oak trees and bermuda greens fill the par 72 course at the Bent Tree Country Club. From 1976 to 1988, the course was home to the Sarasota LPGA Classic. Now, Bent Tree is open to the public and to members for tee times throughout the year. The Sarasota Art Museum is Downtown and offers free admission on the second Sunday of every month. Besides exploring the various exhibits, patrons can also participate in a free art class and enjoy live music.

Shopping and dining across the interstate
When residents want a night out, they normally travel across Interstate 75. “There’s a lot of great, family-owned restaurants in the area,” Montei says. Madfish Grill has an extensive menu that goes beyond seafood, with daily specials like Taco Tuesday and Wednesday’s Italian Night. One of Montei’s favorite places is a little farther away, Yoder’s Restaurant and Amish Village. “They have some of the best homecooked meals,” she says. Yoder’s New Market is in the same building and sells fresh sweets, such as whoopie pies and take-home meals. There are several chain restaurants in Lake Sarasota as well, including Miller’s Ale House, which has over 35 beers on tap. Major retailers are close by. A cluster of shopping centers is across the interstate. Residents can get groceries at Publix; there is also a Walmart and Home Depot.

Locals attend Sarasota events
With so many events in Sarasota throughout the year, residents can often find something to do. The Siesta Key Classic is an annual Sand Sculpting Festival held every fall. “We have artists from all over the world,” Montei says. While attendees come to observe the competition, where sculptors spend a weekend creating their masterpieces, there are plenty of other things to do. Lessons and demonstrations run throughout the weekend; people can enjoy live music, food and drinks. Montei says neighbors often host events in Lake Sarasota, such as garage sales and barbecues.
