Boston bedroom community near an old ironworks

In the 1600s, the waterways around Lynnhurst were valued for their stores of iron ore, which was used at the nearby Saugus Iron Works. Once iron production became less profitable, the city of Saugus gradually transitioned to a Boston bedroom community, with residential neighborhoods like Lynnhurst along its outskirts. “Lynnhurst is very convenient to shops, restaurants and Route 1,” says Donna Gay, a broker at Right Way Realty, LLC, who has been affiliated with Saugus real estate for more than 20 years. “It brings you close to the highway, and you can shoot right into Boston.” Despite the convenience of nearby travel routes and retail, Lynnhurst rests away from the commotion of city life, she says.

Established suburban feel with a few post-2000 homes and townhouses

Lynnhurst’s streets have an established suburban feel, with tall hardwoods and private driveways. Housing includes a mix of mid-to-late 1900s Colonial Revivals, split-levels and raised ranch-style homes, as well as a few post-2000 estates on larger lots. Most single-family houses list between $500,000 and $1 million, though some of the newer custom-built residences top $1 million. Townhouse developments are scattered throughout the neighborhood as well — recent sales were priced just under $600,000. After heavy rains, flooding may occur along the Saugus River and low-lying areas, but most homes are built outside of designated flood zones.

Travel along U.S. Route and nearby T commuter rail access

Lynnhurst is a relatively car-dependent community with very few sidewalks. Many drivers use nearby U.S. Route 1 to travel to and from Boston, about 12 miles south. Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority — known locally as “the T” — offers bus service, and the closest commuter rail station is 3 miles away in Lynn. “That’s the only downfall,” Gay says. “The commuter rail isn’t right at your fingertips.” The closest emergency room is in the MelroseWakefield Hospital, around 5 miles away, and Boston Logan International Airport is approximately 10 miles south.

Short drive for Kelly’s roast beef or Trader Joe’s

Most of Saugus’ retail and dining is clustered along Route 1. Familiar chains, including Walmart, Home Depot and Trader Joe’s, are just a few blocks from the edges of Lynnhurst. Gay points out that several popular restaurants are also nearby, including the Polynesian-themed Kowloon Restaurant and Kelly’s, a North Shore go-to for roast beef sandwiches. Farther south along Route 1, Rosaria Restaurant serves upscale Italian cuisine.

Outdoor recreation and fabled pirate treasure

Many homes in the community have fenced-in backyards, but Lynnhurst is also close to several parks for those seeking even more green space. Sports teams practice at Stackpole Field to the west of Lynnhurst. For fishing, kayaking and hiking, people can visit the 2,200-acre Lynn Woods Reservation, which lies just north of the neighborhood. One of the reservation's most unique features is Dungeon Rock, under which, according to local legend, there is the buried treasure of pirate Thomas Veale. In the summer, Breakheart Reservation’s Pearce Lake is a popular swimming spot.

Saugus’ Santa parade and marching bands for Memorial Day

Though many Lynnhurst residents commute into Boston for work, living in Saugus offers many opportunities to enjoy small-town culture. In September, the city closes down its main street to celebrate Founder’s Day, and the festivities kick off with a commemorative flag-raising ceremony at the town hall. There’s a Memorial Day parade, with high school marching bands and local veterans. On Christmas Eve, Santa rides through Saugus on his sleigh.
