Residential Massachusetts streets extending off Route 1
While Walden Pond in North Saugus is not the same Massachusetts body of water where Henry David Thoreau penned his seminal 1854 novel, it retains a serene atmosphere of its own within the Lynn Woods Reservation. The reservoir sits in the northeast corner of the North Saugus neighborhood, a landscape of suburban streets branching off Route 1. Locals are often just a mile or less from reaching Route 1 to dine out or shop at major retailers, and North Saugus is less than 20 miles north of Boston for commuters. “It’s like a city, but also sort of like a suburb at the same time,” says Julie Tsakirgis, a principal broker with Re/Max Property Shoppe and the Julie Tsakirgis Group. “It’s older; it has the Saugus Ironworks, so there is some history there. It does have access to the river, and that is where properties have become reborn. It’s kind of a mixture of everything for everyone.” But arguably the area’s biggest draw comes down to the old real estate maxim about location, paired with comparatively lower price points than what buyers will find in other areas in and around Boston. “The biggest thing is the accessibility to Boston and access to Route 1, and the affordability of homes,” Tsakirgis says.
Architectural variety on North Saugus streets
Suburban streets flank Route 1 in North Saugus, branching off the main thoroughfare, and are mostly lined with single-family homes. “You can have an older, colonial-style or Cape Cod all the way to a custom contemporary home,” Tsakirgis says. “There are more traditionals than contemporaries, but there are a lot of split-levels. And the center of town has most of the older structures. North Saugus generally doesn’t have larger lots.” Other architectural styles include ranch-style homes and Craftsmans. Single-family homes typically cost between $550,000 and $850,000, but some can cost over $1 million. The neighborhood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, less than the national average of 4.

Exploring nature at Lynn Woods and Breakheart Reservations
The Lynn Woods Reservation occupies over 2,000 acres east of North Saugus, with some of its green sprawl bleeding into the east side of the neighborhood. Visitors can hike along over 30 miles of trails, keep an eye out for wildlife, go mountain biking or climb rock formations. Locals cannot swim, boat or fish at Walden Pond, but the reservoir does offer views of the natural surroundings. The Saugus River winds through parts of the neighborhood and is popular with anglers and kayakers.
In western Saugus, the Breakheart Reservation occupies over 650 acres. “Breakheart is beautiful,” Tsakirgis says. “That’s most of the recreation; there’s a beach there in the summertime, and it’s a great walking area for people. People come from all around to go there.” The densely wooded area also has trails for hiking, biking and skiing, as well as a dog park, playground and Lower Pond, which is open to fishing. The nearby Cedar Glen Golf Course is open to the public and features a nine-hole layout.

Historic artifacts at Saugus Iron Works
The Lynn Woods Reservation also hosts yearly events, typically during the summer. The Summer Walks for Lynn Woods program offers guided tours that are free to the public. The tour takes hikers to Dungeon Rock Cave, which was dug in search of pirate treasure and is supposedly haunted, and to Stone Tower, a 48-foot-tall structure initially used as a fire tower but now visited for its views of the skyline. Additionally, Lynn Woods Cross Country Races are held during the summer and take place twice a week, with different events accommodating both adults and younger competitors.
Situated just off Central Street on the banks of the Saugus River, the historic site of the Saugus Iron Works dates to the 1600s, and a reconstructed version of the complex was built in the 20th century. The site is open to the public from May to October, during which time visitors can see how iron was created, learn about colonists from the time of the works’ founding and take tours of the entire site, which includes a museum, recreated industrial buildings, a 17th-century home and a nature trail.

Shopping and dining along Route 1
Residents head to Route 1 to find restaurants and commercial storefronts, but the bustle of the area doesn’t impact the residential atmosphere. “It does have a nice strip mall with a Trader Joe’s, but it’s more away from the homes and on that major route,” Tsakirgis says. Polcari’s Restaurant cooks up Italian meals for patrons, while Jimmy’s Steer House grills steaks in a bistro-style atmosphere. Diners can find a frozen treat to top off a meal just south at Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt & Ice Cream. Cerra’s Market also sits nearby and stocks Italian groceries, while farther south shoppers can peruse shelves at Trader Joe’s, Target and Marshalls.
