"Established, affordable and convenient"
Cresthill, a rural-tinged neighborhood of attractively priced traditional homes on the southern edge of Savannah, is surrounded by amenities that provide an active lifestyle. Residents live on quiet streets. Yet when they leave their homes, they have easy access to the Vernon River, which winds its way through the marshlands, and nearby Lake Mayer Park, a sprawling, picturesque green space that beckons visitors with an array of recreational opportunities. They also enjoy proximity to Truman Parkway, a major thoroughfare that connects much of Greater Savannah. “It’s a pocket of established, affordable and convenient homes,” says Charity Daniels with Keller Williams Realty Coastal Area Partners, who sells homes throughout Chatham County. “It’s really nice. In fact, a lot of real estate agents live in that area.”

Appealing midcentury homes dominate Cresthill’s landscape
Most homes in Cresthill were built in the 1950s and 1960s, helping give the neighborhood a cohesive look. Single-story ranch designs featuring sturdy brick construction stand out, and a collection of midcentury-moderns can be found. Homes feature spacious, well-manicured lawns and are arranged neatly on winding, tree-shaded streets. Prices typically range from the low $200,000s to the mid-$400,000s. “More accessible to buyers, in a lower price point,” says Tommy Danos, a Realtor with ERA Southeast Coastal Real Estate who has been selling in the area for well over 20 years. “A lot of those houses are midcentury, but they’ve been renovated and fixed up.” A handful of the largest ranch-style homes as well as multi-level dwellings that include the occasional contemporary design, can list for $500,000-plus. Homes located near the Vernon River offer boat docks. Like most neighborhoods in Savannah, especially on the east side, flooding is a concern, even if it’s not common. “Most everything out here is considered a flood zone … but we have had very few times where we experienced a hurricane on the outlying islands,” says Lyn McCuen, an associate broker at Coldwell Banker Access Realty who lives in neighboring Montgomery. “And if you’re on the marshes and the water gets in, it has somewhere to go.”

Hitting the water is always convenient
Flowing through Savannah’s marshlands, the Vernon River forms a portion of the neighborhood’s western border and opens up directly south. The waterway is popular with anglers seeking sportfish such as trout and striped bass. While some subdivisions have their own boat ramps, a public ramp in Montgomery provides relatively easy access to the waterway. “Access to the water and watersports would be a big attraction” for potential homebuyers, Daniels says. The river flows into two other nearby waterways, the Little Ogeechee River and the Ogeechee River, and they lead directly into the open waters of the Atlantic. Cresthill is also close to Lake Mayer Park, a multi-use complex filled with recreational amenities, including a boat dock and fishing pier. The paved path that circles the lake is popular among walkers, runners and bicycle riders. Other amenities include lighted tennis courts, lighted basketball courts, a street hockey rink and a playground. Yoga, dance and arts and crafts classes are among the regular offerings at the park’s community center. Water fitness classes are held at the nearby Chatham County Aquatic Center.

Truman Parkway provides quick access to downtown
Buses along Montgomery Cross Road provide convenient commutes for work or play. Truman Parkway, which runs adjacent to the neighborhood’s east side, offers easy access to points of interest throughout the city. “The neighborhood is minutes from downtown by way of the parkway,” Daniels says. “The location is great.” Only a few homes are close enough to the parkway for noise to be a concern. The Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is less than a 20-mile drive from the neighborhood.

Get festive in Downtown Savannah
Cresthill’s proximity to Downtown Savannah means residents here are close to the array of festivals that take place there over the course of the year. “The Greek Festival is a big deal,” Danos says. Savannah’s Greek Festival has been in place for over 70 years and is full of all sorts of Greek food and desserts, music, dancing and more over three days.
