Cuyler-Brownsville is an important thread in America’s fabric
Cuyler-Brownsville has seen better days. Decades of disinvestment has left the neighborhood depressed, with some homes in disrepair and a dearth of businesses throughout. But this neighborhood remains an important thread in America’s fabric. One of Savannah’s oldest historically Black neighborhoods, it played a major role in fostering the civil rights movement in the 1960s. The four-square home of the Rev. Dr. Mark Ralph Gilbert – where the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stayed when he visited Savannah in 1963 – remains intact on 36th Street, as does the former home of prominent civil rights leader W.W. Law. This history is what gained Cuyler-Brownsville a listing on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1998. While the neighborhood is struggling to find its former glory, it still offers perks many Savannah home buyers are looking for. “The homes are very affordable, and you are really close to downtown,” says Wynn Martin, a Realtor with Eighteen O'Two Realty, who sells throughout the Savannah area.

Vintage four-square cottages and bungalows along 36th Street
The houses in Cuyler-Brownsville are a mix of styles, including two- and three-bedroom Foursquare cottages, rowhouses and bungalows. Most were built in the 1930s, though some are about 20 years older, while others are much newer; ground-up rebuilds from the 1990s and early 2000s. They sit snugly on narrow lots, and while front yards are very small, backyards are bigger, with enough room for small patios and shady trees. Since these vintage homes often don’t include garages (or driveways, for that matter), residents park on the brick-paved streets. Sidewalks are plentiful throughout the neighborhood, offering residents access to nearby schools, parks, restaurants and retailers by foot. Prices range from the low $100,000s to the mid $400,000s for homes in move-in condition. Those looking to renovate can find fixer-uppers for around $80,000. Regarding crime, the neighborhood scores a 6 out of 10 on the CAP Index, a couple points higher than the national average.
