Groveland-Kensington Park
Suburban Neighborhood in Savannah, Georgia
Chatham County 31405, 31406
Well-maintained 1950s homes
The classic midcentury ranch-style homes in Groveland-Kensington Park sit on spacious lots. “I have a 2,700-square-foot home on a half-acre, which in Savannah is kind of rare. We consider them basically mini ranches,” says Miller. “Our streets are really wide and oak-lined, unlike a lot of other neighborhoods here. It’s very beautiful.” Though it’s a highly desirable neighborhood for homebuyers in Savannah, historically, turnover hasn’t been very high. Miller: “It’s got to be higher turnover now, only because the original owners have passed on or gone into nursing home facilities. We have a lot of newer, young families with little babies now.” Miller adds that prices here range “loosely” between $400,000 and $600,000. That’s above the $305,000 median for the city.Take a breather outside
There are shaded benches, a tire swing and three little free libraries in the heart of the neighborhood, on the Reynolds Circle median. “They’re run by community members, there’s one specific for children and then one for adults and one with magazines,” says Miller of the libraries. “Parents can sit and read to their kids and get some fresh air,” she says, adding that because of the neighborhood’s layout, the streets are walkable and bikeable. “Around four thirty, the neighborhood comes alive with people out pushing strollers and walking dogs and teaching kids to ride bikes. We also have an Olympic-sized neighborhood pool with lifeguards and a kiddie splash pond,” Miller says. Membership to the pool is open to any resident of Chatham County, regardless of address. And right next door, there’s a public park, too.Savannah-Chatham County schools
Neighborhood kids are served by schools in the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools district. Many go to Heard Elementary between preschool and fifth grade and Myers Middle between sixth and eighth. Miller says that the elementary school, which is within a mile of most homes, is a big draw for young families. “If your kids are going to go to public school, you want to put them in the best public school you can and heard ranks up there. It’s an award-winning STEAM school, they score very highly in the county and it’s walkable,” she says. Older students go to Jenkins for high school, where they can apply to participate in the School of Engineering. It’s one of several choice programs offered in the district and draws teens interested in science, technology, math and engineering from around Chatham County. The high school earned a B-plus in 2024 as well as the No. 4 spot on Niche’s list of the best public high schools in Chatham County. Heard Elementary earned a B-minus and Myers Middle earned a C-minus that same year.Annual Reynolds Circle happenings
The homeowner’s association here may be voluntary, but it is very active hosting events throughout the year. In the spring, there’s the annual block party, where locals gather to enjoy bouncy houses, live music and food. “It’s a way for neighbors to come out, meet and greet and get to know each other and figure out what’s going on in the community,” says Miller. “We also do a big, huge Halloween event,” she says, adding that during the trick-or-treat-style party in 2023, they gave out nearly 200 bags of candy.Walkable and easy freeway access
The quiet, shaded residential streets here are largely walkable, as are the shopping and dining options close to home on the neighborhood’s west side. “But we’re also very close to a freeway. Not that close, but close enough that you can be downtown in a matter of minutes. So we’re very conveniently located in the center of Savannah,” says Miller, referring to the Harry S. Truman Parkway just a mile east. Via the freeway, the 7-mile drive north to downtown takes only about 15 minutes, depending on traffic.Twelve Oaks shopping and dining
Locals live within a mile and a half of shopping and dining options on Abercorn Street. “People can easily, easily walk there,” says Miller. “There’s a Publix, there’s a Sephora, there’s ice cream, there’s liquor stores, there’s nail salons and clothing stores. And there are three restaurants just in that one shopping center,” she says, adding that OAK 36 Bar & Kitchen is one of her favorites. “OAK 36 is excellent. They make a really good burger but they make a really good cheesesteak as well. And they have a nice happy hour and they do live music, too.”Crime
Miller says Groveland-Kensington Park has an active, volunteer-run neighborhood watch. “The city leaders will tell you it’s one of the best and safest neighborhoods in Savannah. We have a great neighborhood watch, headed up by a retired police officer who knows everybody. We also have a house watch program, so when you go out of town you can make us aware of your plans, we make the police aware of them, and then we keep an eye on your house while you’re gone.” But she says the community-oriented atmosphere isn’t overbearing. “We’re not a bunch of Karens but we are a bunch of carers. If we know that somebody has been sick or hurt and they need help around the house, we’ll do that,” she says.
