Azaleas and Spanish moss next to popular retail
A home in Highland Park places residents roughly 10 miles outside of buzzing Downtown Savannah and beside the city's south-side shopping hub. The location is known for its retail hot spots, but homeowners enjoy an equal amount of natural scenery and suburban seclusion. Parks and outdoor getaways swath the east side of town, breaking up busy commercial landscapes. Even the major thoroughfares overflow with blushing azaleas and towering trees dripping with Spanish moss.

Close shopping and local eateries
Highland Park locals don't need to travel far for errand running or leisurely shopping trips with Oglethorpe Mall and Abercorn Commons in town. Kroger is the closest stop for weekly grocery shops, and the Shops at Sandfly has a Walmart for other errands. Among the many chain restaurants in town are a handful of beloved local eateries. Sweet Potatoes Kitchen is a long-time neighborhood favorite, well-known for its Food Network appearance, featuring its famous banana pudding.

Affordable homes south of Savannah
Highland Park homes share similar designs with established midcentury roots. Brick-clad ranch styles sit on mid-sized grassy lots that feel far away from the shops and malls next door. Old oaks and maples stand several stories tall, towering over the low-slung residences. Highland Park properties range from $200,000 to $275,000, with the majority landing around $250,000, which is far below the city's median home price of $350,000. Condos go for closer to $200,000 on Waters Avenue's short cul-de-sac side streets. Apartments and hotels also fringe the edges of town. “The draw is that it’s more affordable than the north side of town,” says Joel Solomon, Realtor at Century 21 Solomon properties and Savannah local. Most Highland Park listings find new owners in under a month.

Soccer and swimming with nearby gardens
Highland Park's green east side supplements the commercial-heavy west side, housing lakes, parks and outdoor recreation. After school, the kids head to the Jennifer Ross Soccer Complex for practice or to hop in the Olympic-sized pool at the Chatham County Aquatic Center next door. The Savannah Botanical Gardens offers free admission to its flowering gardens that bloom year-round in Savannah's mild climate. Bacon Park has all the usual suspects, plus a sprawling 27-hole golf course. Lake Mayer Park is the go-to for a walk, run or bike ride with a view, connecting to the waterside Truman Linear Park Trail. Chatham County Public Library is a popular spot to relax on rainy days.

Residents of Highland Park are served by the Chatham Area Transit System.
Busy bordering roads and buses
Positioned between Savannah's busy Abercorn Street and the Harry S. Truman Parkway, commutes are straightforward in Highland Park. “People move to the south side for proximity to where they work,” Solomon says. The main arterial roads route locals north toward downtown and westward, away from the ocean shoreline. Residents can typically travel into downtown Savannah in less than 30 minutes. Most Highland Park homeowners are drivers, but many opt for a car-free ride via the nearby Chatham Area Transit (CAT) lines. The Memorial Health University Medical Center is around the corner. The Savannah Hilton Head Airport is roughly 30 minutes away for long-distance travel.
Joint Enrollment with Georgia universities

Parents and guardians will be pleased to learn that each public school is within a 10-minute drive from Highland Park. Jenkins High seniors can get a head start on higher education through the school's Joint Enrollment Program, which partners with Armstrong Atlantic State University, Savannah Technical College and Savannah State University.
